Dr Gore, the retired Bishop of Oxford, who has entered his seventyfourth year, after starting a new theological discussion, has been all his life the great advocate of Christian Socialism. Bishop Gore comes from a family, the members of which are noted for their longevity. Despite the fragility of his appearance, he was once mistaken for an athlete. Just after he had taken his fellowship at Trinity College the captain of the boats entered his rooms, slapped Dr Gore on the back, and remarked. "You just come with me in a tub pair, and I should not wonder if I could lick you into shape.” Suddenly noting a strange look in Dr Gore’s eyes, the captain of the boats turned and fled with the exclamation. “By jove! I believe 3-ou’re the new don.”
