VARSITY HOLDS LIVELY DEBATE.

“ MINISTER ” EJECTED FROM “ PARLIAMENT.”

Ejection of a Cabinet Minister who sought to quell rowdy students at a mock Parliament held by the Canterbury College Debating Society on Saturday evening held up the proceedings for a time. The debate was very humorous, and the occupants of the spectators’ gallerv kept the proceedings lively. The Speaker was Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., who at the conclusion of the evening expressed his thanks for the proceedings, which, though a trifle, noisy, were well in order. The business was to discuss a Bill to amend “The Canterbury College and Agricultural College Act 1596.” The Bill read, in part, as follow“ This Act may be cited as the Canterbury College Perpetual Spinsters Abolition Act, 1926. ‘Student’ includes Engineers and members of the Christian Union. ‘Lectures’ are gramophone recitals wherein the record never wears out. The Professorial Board of C. U. C. shall forthwith establish a matrimonial agency or bureau for the exclusive use and enjoyment of students at the said C.U.C. A matrominial agent or bureaucrat (hereinafter called the Registrar) who shall be at least sixty years of age shall be appointed by the said Professorial Board to superintend, supervise and otherwise attend to the said matrimonial agency or bureau as the case may be. All engagements, promises to marry, marriage settlements and covenants to settle in anticipation of marriage entered into or executed by students at C.U.C. aforesaid after the 24th day of April, 1926, shall within one hour thereafter be duly registered in the said matrimonial agency or bureau. Registration shall be effected by both the contracting parties performing a series of o£cu!atory exercises in the presence and to the satisfaction in all things of the Registrar. All engagements and promises t.o marry as aforesaid which are not. registered as prescribed by this Act and also all engagements entered into by any student whatsoever before the coming into operation of this Act shall henceforth to all intents and purposes be null and void. No student shall be permitted to enter into an engagement or promise to marry with more than three (3) persons at the same time.” The Bill after being passed in its first two stages was defeated at the third reading.
