Fashions and Furbelows m

NOTES BY SPECIAL CONTRIBUTORS.

DID YOU KNOW That wool-backed satin is a material which is much in favour at the moment for the. more elaborate kind of lingerie? It may seem an extravagant choice, and can certainly not be recommended for every-day wear, but, lor special occasions it has several points in its favour. It is, of course, washable, and it is so decorative in itself that it needs very' little in the way of trimming. Many of the new nightgowns are cut in sleevleless styde, and are joined over the shoulders simply by complicated straps of satin ribbon - an attractive fashion which also has ali the charm of novelty. That ribbon is to be used a great deal for trimming frocks this season? AA idc skirted dance dresses boast whirls of stiff ribbon placed at regular intervals all round the hem, and other models are caught at the waist with eight or nine rows of ruched ribbon, each row overlapping the next, and the whole is finished in the front or at the side with a big bow or a jewelled buckle. Instead of cuffs, very' many' of the. newest frocks are cut with long sleeves which are tied at the wrist with ribbon, and another idea is to finish an apron tunic, with a small butterfly bow at either side of the waist-band. DON’T BE ALWA YS TIRED - It’s all very' well to admit you feel “ Mondayish ” when you start the week’s routine, but I do hope you’re one of those sensible people who guard against steadfastly surrounding yourself with an air of boredom, which

falls upon all your friends like the historic “ wet blanket! ” Everyone has their lack-lustre day. but if yours happens to be a different day to Muriel's, then it’s only' fair to keep the knowledge of it to yourself, and not spoil Muriel’s joy- time by plunging her into fed-upness too. There’s quite a lot of constantly' tired people about these days, and more’s the pity. Perhaps the weather is at fault; perhaps it’s simply' the toll of late nights; but in any case we all ought to do our best not to add to the number. If you feel listless and out-of-sorts, why not devote a week to a “ Rest Cure ” —resting on every possible occasion for one complete week? If that doesn’t improve matters, then it’s time to enlist the doctor’s aid. He will most likely' work wonders, if you make up your mind to carry' out his instructions properly'. Anything is better than to drag on and on lackadaisically, and to infect others with your complaint. It’s really up to each and all of us, after all, to make the most of life for other people as well as for ourselves—and to do that well, surely cheerfulness is the great necessity.

A'alue of Charcoal.—Meat that has to be kept for a day cr two before being cooked will remain fresh if sprinkled with charcoal. A piece of charcoal placed in the saucepan in which cabbage is boiled will prevent a disagreeable smell arising. Pieces of charcoal placed in flower vases will keep the water sweet, and it will also help to keep sweet the soil used for pot plants.
