Sir R. Heaton Rhodes arrived in Christchurch to-day. The Hon W. Nosworthv arrived in Christchurch from Wellington this morning.

Mr G. Aldridge', secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Association. Wellington, is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr J. Douglas Perrett, a well-known Auckland artist, is spending a few days in Christchurch.

Mr Arthur Lilly, A.R.C.0., is visiting Temulca to give the opening recital on the organ, which has been rebuilt, at St Peter's Church there. Field-Marshall Sir W. R. Bird wood, Bt., G.C.8., has been appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Ist New Zealand Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry).

Captain L. Macintosh Ellis. Director of Forestry, arrived from Wellington oo official business yesterday. After spending some time with the local forestry officers, he left for Dunedin by the 12.20 p.m. train. Messrs IT. J. W. Lord (Masterton), L. J. Brooks and J. Burns (Wellington). L. W. Harris (Dunedin), L. R. Martin (Auckland) and W. M’Catlum (Wellington) are among recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel.

The death is announced from Sydney of Dr Stopford, an ex-Member of the Legislative Assembly and formerly a resident of New Zealand, where he was actively associated with the Child Welfare movement.

Mr J. L. Beck, well known throughout New Zealand as a musician and successful teacher, has taken up his residence in Christchurch. Mr Beck is the father of Messrs Haydn and Harold Bfeck, who have both made their mark in the musical world. The former is now in Australia and the latter is in Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs John Frame, of Frame's Tours, Ltd., London, who are touring the world, are at present in New Zealand making a survey of the country for future tourist operations, are now in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Frame are leaving shortly for Dunedin to visit the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, and will then return to the North Island, calling at Rotorua and the other tourist resorts. They will leave Auckland for Vancouver by the s.s. Aorangi in February. Mr W. J. Smyth, Christchurch manager of J. Ilott, Ltd., ■who will leave this week to take up an important executive position with the head office of the concern ni Wellington, was recently met by the members of the local branch and presented with an engraved tobacco pouch and a signed water-col-our sketch of himself. Jn returning thanks Mr Smyth expressed sincere regret at leaving the Christchurch office where his associations with past and present members had been of the hapriest. He hoped, however, that his new duties would permit him to keep in -lose touch with them for a long time to come. •
