Mr and Mrs W. J. Bigg, of Beckenham, intend leaving shortly on a trip to England.

Mrs C. C. Paterson, Theodocia Street, Timaru, has returned to the south from Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Charles Buchanan motored to Christchurch on Sunday after a visit to Timaru.

Mr and Mrs A. E. Layland and Miss Layland. of Auckland, are among the recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. Miss Hay, Pigeon Bay, is sending a few days in Christchtirch, ana is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Amy Courage. Amberley. is spending a short holiday in Christchurch.

Mrs and Miss Barron, of Gisborne, and Mrs Browning, of Auckland, are among the recent arrivals registered at Warner’s Hotel.

Mrs A. C. Matheson. Dunedin, and Mrs W. E. Herbert, Wellington, left Christchurch this morning for Kaikoura, en route to Wellington. Captain and Mrs Gordon Weston, London, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Miss Lois Bassett, of the staff of the Timaru Public Hospital, has returned to Timaru after some months in Christchurch. Mrs W. Priest and Miss Priest, Bank Street, Timaru, motored south from Christchurch on Monday and left yesterday for Dunedin. Mr, Mrs and Miss Flavelt, Christchurch, and Miss Dorothy Flavell, Auckland, who were in Timaru, left on Sunday for the north. Mrs Gibson, Spreydon, is spending a few days with Mrs R. O. M'Donald, New Brighton, previous to her leaving for Auckland. Miss Kathleen Slattery, of Leeston, and her cousin Miss Eileen Hurrell, Beckenham, are the guests of Miss Olga M’Donald, New Brighton. Mrs S. Wright, Bidwill Street, has returned to Timaru from a visit to Christchurch and Dunedin, and is the guest of Mrs Kelland, The Barton, FairMrs Cookson, of Kawa Kawa, Bay of Islands, daughter of Mrs Rapley, Leeston, who has been visiting her relatives in the Ellesmere district, left yesterday on her return home. Mr and Mrs D. Cunningham, Miss Hazel. Cunningham, and Miss Jean Curl spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs Reg. Mason, “ Elmwood,” Okains Bay. Mrs 11. E. Button, Papanui, will return from Dunedin early next week. Mr and Mrs 11. H. Wauchop have left for Dunedin, where they will spend a short holiday. The engagements are announced of Frederick Harold, son of Mr and Mrs 11. Faber Brown, Timaru, to Anne Orchard, daughter of Mr S. Orchard, Riccarton, and of Dr D. M’Kee Dickson, eldest son of the Rev and Mrs Dickson. Christchurch, to Erena, third daughter of Mr and Mrs E. C. d’Auvergne, Waihao Forks, Timaru.

The tennis tournament which is being organised in connection with the Hospital garden fete promises to be most successful, and will be under the supervision of Mrs J. C. Lord. The Municipal Band will play at intervals during the afternoon. Mrs J. G. Collins and a band of assistants will introduce a number of novel games of skill, and the stalls, whiefy are numerous, will be stocked with a great variety of articles of all descriptions.

A most enjoyable time was spent last evening, when a surprise party visited the residence of Mr and Mrs Robinson, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon. Games and musical items formed the evening's amusements, and a dainty supper was served to the guests. Those present were:—Misses D. Craig. M. Barron, M. Lee, R. Stribling, M. Swanson. B. Barron, I. Drinkwater, I. Stribling; Messrs L. M'Quinn, 11. Collins, V. (Taney, A. Nixon, L. Budd, R. Opie, J. Clegg, L. Lumby, J. Barron, C. Iledgman, R. Martigan, R. S. Wilson, T. C. Woodbury and E. Townsend. An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs S. H. Harrison, 274, Oxford Terrace, on Monday to celebrate Mrs Harrison’s birthday. The music for the dancing was supplied by Misses K. Harrison, V. Copeland, I. Wright and Mr Gray. A dainty supper was served. During the evening items were given by Miss K. Harrison (piano) and Mr Gray (saxophone) and Mr S. Heyder. Among those present were;—Mr and Mrs G. Falvey, Mr and Mrs S. IT. Harrison, Mr and Mrs G. Carter, Mr and Mrs K. Watts, Misses Kathleen Harrison, Vera Copeland, Renie Iloughson, Mary Iloughson, Eileen Iloughson, Gerta Jenkinson, Idris Whall, Irnie Wright and Susan Tones. Messrs S. Heyder, W. G. IToughson, K. Watts, W. Carter, S. H. Harrison, J. Falvey, W. G. Haybittle, C. Ward, J. Menere, L. Gray, R. Cowan, L. Williams. W. Bergman, N. Percy and A. Montier.

Mr and Mrs Shand. “Kaum-on-in” Batch, were host and hostess at a fancy dress party given in honour of Mr and Mrs Brown, in a house kindly loaned by Mr and Mrs Stewart. Games and dancing were kept in full swing until midnight. A delightful supper was handed round, after which the prizes were presented by Mrs Brown. Shand (Black and White Pierrot), R. Stewart (Scotch Lassie), B. Shand (Moth), Mrs Brown (Riding Costume), Miss M. Carlisle (Gypsy), and Miss E. Watt (Gipsy Girl) ; Messrs Brown (Swagger). E. Good (Captain Lipton), T. Carlisle (Uncle Sam) and Master Brown (Hard Cp>. Others present were: - Mrs and Miss Young (Kaiapoi), Mrs Watt. Mrs Midglev.
