MONUMENT TO BE RAISED IN OLD FRENCH BURIAL GROUND, AKAROA.

As a result of representations made by the peopie of Akaroa the Department of Internal Affairs has arranged with the Public Works Department for the construct ion of a rubble wall and monument at the old French cemetery in the borotigh'. The cemetery was used as a burial ground for both Roman jO&t holies and Protestants in the very early days of Akaroa and it afterwards became neglected. The size of the plot which is to be enclosed is 54ft by 69ft and it is situated in one of the borough reserves in Akaroa. The monument will be Sft in height and 3ft wide at the base. The wall is to be 4ft high with oft pillars. A tablet at the entrance to the flat will contain the words “Old French' Burial Ground.” The names of the following early residents of Akaroa, who are known to have been buried in the cemetery will appear on the monument; — Madame Libeau, Madame Pierre David, Madame Le Vaillarit, Madame Eteveneaux, Mile. Amelie Eteveneaux. M- Fleuri, M. Rouslot, M. Andre Jendrot, Capt. Edourd Le Lievre, Mr Magee, Mrs Magee. Mr Peter Walter, Mrs John Breitmaver, Miss Adelle Breitmayer, Mr John Breitmayer, Mrs Zillwood, Mr Zillwood, Mrs Watkins. The following will be added:—"And many other early settlers who rest in this burial ground, but whose graves were unidentifiable when the Government ejected improvements in , P 25. The earliest known burial took olace in May, 18-12.”
