HOSPITAL REOPENED. From Our Correspondent'. ASHBURTON. January 26. .The private nursing home which was closed last week by order of the Health Department, has been reopened. Dr Dawson, the. District Medical Officer of Health, stated to-day that the regulations having been complied with, the hospital had been thoroughly disinfected, following a case of infectious disease. HIGH SCHOOL BOARD. The Ashburton High School Board met to-day, when there were present: Messrs J. W. Bowden (chairman), F. Frampton, John Browrf, R. Kennedy, Robert Bell, W. T. Lill and A. Lane. The chairman reported that £4OO had been paid off the loan account, making a total of £llOO for the year. It was decided to procure from the Technical School twelve desks sent there in mistake by the Canterbury Board. The tender of Smith Bros., at £52 10s for the supply and erection of lockers without doors was accepted, subject to the Department’s consent being obtained. The action of the chairman in having painting put in hand at the school and the rectory was confirmed. Accounts totalling £67 15s 7d were passed for payment, LISTENING-IN AT HAHATERE. ( Though the size of the settlement does not as yet warrant the formation of a musical club. Hahatere is enjoying the privilege of listening-in to some of the best music broadcasted throughout Australia and New Zea-' land. In one of the huts a loud-speak-er is installed, and round this the whole community gather. On Sunday evening a concert from Sydney was heard, and it is a regular part of the programme to listen-in to concerts broadcasted from tfie Festival Hall at the Dunediii Exhibition, BURNS "NICHT.” Burns “Nicht” was celebrated by a banquet held at the Orange Hall, under the auspices of the Ashburton County Scottish Society. The chief (Mr H. Sinclair) presided over a large attendance. Mr W. B. M’Ewan, of Dunedin, gave an interesting address on "The Immortal Memory ot .Robert Burns.” The following toast-list was honoured:—"The King,” proposed by the chief; "Bonnie Scotland,” Rev A. S. Morrison—Mr Bruce; "Brither Scots,” Senior-Sergeant Mathieson—Mr Andrew Brown; "The Lassies,” Mr J. Drew—Mr A. Brown; "Oorsels.” Mr W. Patterson—Mr E, G. Craighead. Songs were sung as follow:—"There was a Lad was Born in Kyle,” and “A Man’s a Man For A’ That,” Mr John Brown; "Afton Water” and "C* a’ the Airts,” Mr G. Craighead; “Ye Banks and Braes” and "Burns and Scotland Yet,” Mrs E. G. Craighead. PERSONAL. Mr W. Page, of Ashburton, has been appointed to referee the boxing match Volaire versus Casey at Christchurch on Thursday evening for the lightweight title of New Zealand. Mr and Mrs Angus Horsey, of Spreadeagle, who have been touring America, Britain and Europ# for some months, expect to leave Sydney for New Zealand on Thursday, They will return to Ashburton early next month. THE COUNTY RATES. The sum of £668 was collected in rates at the offices of the Ashburton County Council yesterday. This leaves about £II.BOO outstanding. INFANTILE PARALYSIS. The death occurred at the County Hospital yesterday of a boy who was admitted from the country several months ago suffering from infantile paralysis. LADIES’ RELAY RACES. At the sports meeting to be held here on February 17 in connection with the visit of the American athletes, a relayrace will be held between ladies 4 teams representing Ashburton and Christchurch. Trials will be held early next month to select the local team. DAMAGE BY FIRE AVERTED. Sparks from the engine of a threshing plant at Lismore this morning ignited a gorse hedge between tjje properties of Messrs Parker and Simpson. A willing band of helpers soon extinguished the fire, but not before about twenty chains of the hedge had been destroyed. Had there not been men on the spot serious damage to the crops might., have resulted.
