CANTERBURY RUN UP BIG SCORE.

OTAGO BOWLERS HEAVILY PUNISHED; viWms&L- AND COX MAKES DOUBLE CENTURY.

The Plunket Shield cricket match between Otago and Canterbury was continued at Lancaster Park to-day in fine weather. The match was begun yesterday afternoon. Canterbury batted first, and when stumps were drawn at 5.45 p.m. they had put on the big total of 289 for the loss of three wickets. To this total A. Cox contributed 153 (not out), the highest score ever made by a Canterbury player in Plunket Shield matches. It was a magnificent innings, one of the best seen at Lancaster Park of recent years. Cox gave no chances and he did not look like getting out at any stage of his innings.

To-day’s Play. The innings to-day was continued by Cox and by Gregory, who had 21 to his credit. Cox faced Torrance bowling from the south end. Cox scored a four off the seventh ball of the over—a nice drive to the boundary. Douglas bowled from the north end. Gregory was applauded for square cutting Douglas twice to the boundary. They were pretty shots. The second one brought the third century up. Gregory was batting vigorously. In Torrance’s third over he drove him hard to the fence. Gregory reached 40 with a four off Douglas. Then Douglas sent down a loose delivery, and Gregory pulled it round to the leg boundary. Cox was scoring steadily though not lyWhen the total was 328 Blamires bowled fron-fc the north end in place of Douglas, who had proved expensive. The second last ball of Blamires’s over Gregory drove to the fence for four. Torrance continued to bowl from the south end. He was again very steady and kept a good length.

Gregory, who had scored 49, was nearly run out. He attempted to run for too short a ball and just got back in time. Gregory reached 50 with a single off Blamires. He had been batting for 82 minutes. This over Gregory brought 340 up by sending Blamires round to leg for three. GREGORY CAUGHT OUT. In thfr next over Gregory was caught behind the wickets by Galland off Torrance. 341—4—53. , Woods was the next batsman. ITe opened 'his account with a single off Blamires and then he drove Torrance nicely for a boundary. In the next over Woods earned a round of applause when be cut Blamires nicely through the slips for four. The visitors tried another change of bowlers. Alloo going on in place of Blamires when the total was 356. Woods reached double figures with a single off Alloo, and then Cox scored 1 and made his total 180. Just after Cox was nearly run out. He ran. out of his crease, and the ball was returned smartly. Alloo, however, stood in front of the wickets. Otherwise Cox would probably have been run out. Blamires relieved Torrance at the south end. WOODS HAS A LET-OFF. When Woods had 16 to his credit he gave a chance off Alloo, but Baker juggled with the ball and dropped it. Cox was gradually getting near his second century. He scored a four and a single off Blamires, and this made his total 190. Woods sent Blamires nicely through the slips for four, and this made his total 25. WICKET-KEEPER BOWLS. Cox scored a couple off Alloo round to leg, and made his total 196. Cox then scored a couple of singles off Alloo. Matters were getting desperate for the visitors. GalJand, the wicketkeeper, took the pads off and went on to bowl at the south end in place of Blamires. M’Mullan acted as wicketkeeper. Cox scored a single off Galland and made his total 199. The crowd gasped when a ball or two later he missed one from Galland. COX REACHES 200. Next ball, however, he sent for a couple, and reached his double century. Cox had been batting for four and a half hours. There has been only one other double century made in Plunket Shield matches. That was the 256 scored by S. G. Smith for Auckland against Canterbury in January, 1920. Just after Cox reached his double century, the fourth century was hoisted. It had taken just over four and a half hours to make. WOODS AND COX DISMISSED. The fifth wicket fell with the total 402, Woods being caught by Duncan off Alloo. 402—5—28. Sandman joined Cox. The long innings of Cox came to an end when his total was 204. He stepped out to one from Alloo, and was stumped by M’Mullan. lie had been batting for four hours and forty minutes. lie hit nineteen fours, and gave no chances. 405—6—204. TWO WICKETS GO QUICKLY. . Brunton filled the vacancy. He and Sandman added 25 to the total. When the score was 430, Brunton was caught in the slips by Blamires off Galland. 430—7—18. M’Ewin went in, but before he had scored he was caught behind the wickets by M’Mullan off Galland. 430—8—0. The luncheon adjournment was then taken. THE TAIL WAGS WELL.

On resuming after lunch, Torrance bowled from the north end and Galland from the south. Runs came rather slowly. When the total was 457, Alloo relieved Torrance. Alloo had six scored off his first over, and the board showed 460. In the next over Sandman hit out to one from Gall and, missed it and was clean bowled. 465—9—20. Findlay was the last man in. Read reached double figures with a single off Alloo. Then Findlay broke his “ duck ” with a single off the same bowler. Findlay brought 470 up by'hitting Gallaud for three. AUoo was trying to tempt the batsmen with his slow deliveries, but they refused to be trapped. Findlay was applauded when he drove Alloo to the fftnee. In the next over Read scored a couple of fours, a two and a single off Galland, and this made his total 26. The " tail ,J was wagging well. Douglas went on at the north end in place of Alloo. of twos off Douglas, but with the fifth ball of the over Douglas bowled him. 495—10—30. The innings closed just before 3 p.m. It had lasted six hours. At 4 p.m. Otago's first innings was: 55 runs for two wickets. OTAGO’S FIRST INNINGS. Otago commenced their first innings at 3.10 p.m. M’Mullan and Knight were the opening batsmen. Read bowled from the north end. Knight facing him. Read's first over was a maiden. Findlay bowled from the south end. Ilis sixth delivery beat M’Mullan and did not seem to be far off the wickets. Findlay’s first over was also a maiden. Read bowled another maiden over. Then M’Mullan opened Otago’s account with a single off Findlay. Next ball, however, Knight was caught behind the wickets by Brunton. I—l—o. Alloo came in. The first ball he received from Findlay went to the boundary for byes. Then M’Mullan drove Read for four and followed it with a single. Alloo opened his account with a couple off Read. ALLOO NEARLY RUN OUT. In the next over a fine chance of running Alloo out was lost. A more accurate return by Talbot would’probably have done the trick. A minute later Alloo was nearly run out for a second time. It was a very short run, and Alloo would have been out if the ball had struck the wickets. The rate of Scoring was slow, and after eight overs there were only 22 runs on the board. Alioo reached double figures by pulling Read to leg for four. M’Mullan was still one short of double figures. Next over Alloo brought 30 up with a boundary off Findlay after thirty-three minutes’ play. M’Mullan made his tally 10 with a single off Read. Alloo was scoring fairly rapidly now. In one over he sent Findlay twice to the boundary. This made the total 43. SECOND WICKET FALLS. Canterbury tried a change of bowlers, M’Ewin going on at the north end\in place of Read. Talbot bowled from the south end in place of Findlay. Blamires brought the halfcentury up with a single off Talbot. It had taken nearly fifty minutes to make. At the tea adjournment the score was 55 for the loss of two wickets. On resuming after the tea adjournment M Mullan faced M Ewin. bowling from the north end. M’Mullan drove hime twice for two. Before he had scored Galland gave a hard low chance in the slips off Talbot. Gasson missed it. At 103 Galland was bowled. Scores;— CANTERBURY. First Innings. E. A. Gasson, c Knight b Torrance 0 I R.
