GREAT WORK ACHIEVED AT NEW LEPER STATION

PATIENTS GRATEFUL FOR ATTENTION GIVEN. “Great work is being achieved at Makogai, and the island has been made a definite base for activities it is not too much to hope for i largely extended scope in our work 1 among the lepers,” said- Mr A. Knowles, Government Health Officer, who had ( charge of the recent removal of nine i lepers from Quail Island, Lyttelton, to ■ the new station at Makogai Island. Mr Knowles, who returned by the Ilinemoa, said that the patients, numbering over 300 and including six white people, were, all feeling the great benefits which beautiful Makogai had to offer. The organisation work carried out by Dr Neff and ten sisters was remarkably complete. The nine patients from New Zealand were all progressing favourably, and declared that the staff did too much for them and not enough on their own behalf. As the good results of the -work at Makogai became apparent, it followed that more work could be done among the islands. k » Tramway Takings. The takings on all lines, including lines to the races, in the Christchurch tramway system during the nine days of the holidays from the Saturday to the following Sunday week, was £9563, a decrease of £4BO on the total for the nine days of last year’s holidays. The four days’ traffic to the races at Riccarton decreased by £175, but the three days’ traffic to the trotting races at Addington and to the show increased bv £2Ol.
