FRENCH TO EXPLORE ARCTIC REGIONS.
WILL USE AMPHIBIOUS MOTOR VEHICLES FOR TRAVEL IN ICE COUNTRY.
Tly Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.—Sydney “ Sun ” Cable. (Received November 19, 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, November 18. Plans are being prepared for a Polar expedition by French naval officers under Government auspices, starting from Spilzbergen in June. The principal object of the expedition, which will travel in six specially-constructed amphibious motor vehicles, is to cross the great unexplored region between the North Pole and Point Barrow (Alaska) and find whether land exists there.
It was recently announced that Dr Jean Baptiste Charcot, son of the famous French explorer, Professor J. M. Charcot, would lead an expedition to the Arctic. Dr Charcot is practically the only Frenchman who is carrying on this kind of work at the present time.
