Enormous crowds watched the final stages of the Golf Championships at Prestwick. Players were frequently delayed for lengthy intervals, while the spectators were shepherded off the course. MacDonald and Smith began accompanied by 5000 and returned with a following of 10,000. resembling a marching army, in which worried officials carried the standards. Several spectators were hit by flying balls and dogs were a very great nuisance.
