Lyle, i The Governor's Bay Women’s Progressive Club held instead of its monthly meeting, a public demonstration on Saturday afternoon, when Airs Dean, of St Albans, kindly attended to demonstrate her method of mat-making. She showed her beautiful rugs, and then explained very minutely her method of making them, which inspired nearly all the members with u determination to also make mats of similar design. Afternoon tea was served, and Mrs Dean was heartily thanked for her kindness and for her interesting and useful demonstration. A clarinet solo was given by Air If. Crow, a violin solo by Air J. Newstead, and Miss Welsh gave a humorous recitation. Votes of thanks were accorded to tho soloists and Miss Welsh, and with a community sing tho meeting closed. The Selwyn Assembly held their usual danco in the Selwyn Street Hall on Saturday evening and it proved a great success. Over eighty couples danced to tho music of Miss Till* vshorl’s orchestra. There was a very largo attendance, people coming from Christchurch, New Brighton, AVoolston and Sydenham. Tho danco was in aid of tho Aranui Hall building fund, and a gooJ sum was raised. Excellent dance music was supplied by Airs F. Innes’s orchestra, from New Brighton. Mr (J. NankiveU acted as AI.C. A splendid supper was provided. The supper-room was in charge of Airs Scott, and the Ladies’ Sofia! Committee supplied the supper. A lucky spot ” waltzing competition was won by Miss Henderson and Air Eggo. Euchre prizes were won by Aliss G. Nankivell I. Airs Smith 2, Air AY. At ills 1, Air Streeter 2. Two consolation prizes w<'ro won by Air G. Reed and Mrs Eggo. Mr H. Aston, chairman of the Social Committee, presented the prizes. The euchre and dance was brought to a close at a lato hour with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s fortnightly social hold last Monday was a most successful function. Over bOO members and friends were present. The president. Air C. S. Thomas, occupied tho chair, and was supported by Messrs G. Ritchie and G. Sey (vice-presidents). During tho evening six new members were enrolled, which brought the total of new members for the season up to ninety-four. The programme was in tho hands of Messrs G. Ritchie (vice-president) and F. G. Bell (director of the society), and the following contributed items. Society’s Pipe Band under Pipe Major’J. Shanahan; songs, Messrs C. Bills, Rodda, ami Bracy AYilson, Miss Bowbyes and Mr D. Courtney; recitations, Airs H. M Lcod an ( ] Air Laiirenson; monologue, Master Noel Xevvson; musical trio. Mrs E. A. Smith (piano), Nora Smith (’cello) and Joan' Smith (violin); I-lawaian music. Air E. Butterfield and Aliss Butterfield. The latier also contributed a vocal item. A'iolin solo, Aliss AA’ilson ; piping selections, Piper Campbell. The Highland. Fling was danced by Aliss Irene Bell ; seann triubhnis, Aliss Doris Bell; highland reel. Misses D. Caldon, R. Peterson, \’ Robertson and Doris Bell. The accompanists for the evening were Airs E. A. Smith, Miss Neatc, Aliss Daniels and Aliss Bradford. A short dance i oil owed the concert programme, music being supplied by Airs E. A. ’ Smith and Air F. P. Frye. At a general meeting of the Christchurch Crecho and Kindergarten Association hold last week there was a good attendance of members. Apologies were received from Mrs T. E. Tavj lor and Aliss Tabari. Miss Iris Montgomery, Little River, will arrive in Christchurch to-day. Mr and Airs Gladstone Robinson. Oakwood, have returned to Timaru from Christchurch. Air and Airs F. Northcote, AYaiau, are spending a few davs in Christchurch and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs George Rhodes and Aliss Shona Rhodes, Beverley, returned to Christchurch yesterday after a week at the Hydro Grand, Timaru.
