TALES FOR THE CHILDREN. No audenco is more attentive than an audience of interested children, and nono are more appreciative. Tho fact was well demonstrated in tho Children’s Library tins morning, wnen tho first cf the series ot stories for children that are to bo told on Saturday morning throughout the winter months, were told by Miss Elliott. Fairy tales and poems suited to tho audience formed the bill of tare and they were received by tho children with every evidence of delight. Miss Elliott, who has inaugurated tho story-hour system in Christchurch, conies front England. She is organiser and adviser to Anglican Sunday Schools in tho Christchurch district, and has been prominently identified with children’s work, not only in Christchurch but in other parts of the world. The story hour is now being recognised by educational authorities in all parts of the world. In America and Canada it is a feature of almost every public library. In some cities there are official story tellers attached to tho staffs of the libraries. In Christchurch tho movement has not yet: progressed to that stage, but a number of ladies and gentlemen liaro volvtn tee-red their services, and thi* has made possible the arrangement cf a regular programme of story hours throughout tho remainder of the winter months.
