WAR URGED.
SEMI-OFFICIAL REPORT. CHINESE TROUBLE SPREADS By Telegraph —Press Association—Copyright PEKIN, June 17. A Japanese semi-official news agency reports that sixty representatives of leading organisations interviewed the War Minister and submitted the following demands:— 1- —The severance of diplomatic relations with Britain. -■- The dispatch of Chinese troops to all commercial ports for the protection of Chinese subjects. 3.—A declaration of war against Britain. The Minister replied that their wisest policy was to confine their activities to peaceful patriotic movements and await the self-awakening of the foreigners, but, if the worst came, the Government would not act contrary to the expectations of the people. Report; from Shanghai state that Constable Gavan, a Britisher, while dispersing a mob of strike agitators chased the student ringleaders into an alleyway and was attacked by a hostile crowd with choppers and other weapons. lie was severely wounded and was rescued in an unconscious condition. ilc was taken to the hospital and operated upon, and is expected to recover. POWERS SEND ANOTHER NOTE. lleuter's Telegrams. PEKIN, June 17. A further Note, on behalf of tho interested foreign Powers, has been' handed to Wni Chia-pu, calling: attention to the. fact that, since the previous Note, new and grave incidents had occurred at Shanghai and in other localities, including the shooting of a British subject and the wounding of a lady accompanying him. The Note adds: “But. from all sides, wc are informed that anti-foreign sentiment is developing, and this causes us grave apprehension. Wishing above all to dispel every cause which, might impair tho cordial relations between China and foreign Governments, we urge upon the Chinese Government’ the imperative necessity for taking* tho steps incumbent upon it to meet a grave sit'nation. * y
