FURTIVE STEPS IN THE DARK.
HAGLEY PARK EPISODE. ‘‘Toughs,” whispered a Christchurch man, who, while walking through Hagley Park late the other night, heard the subdued shuft'le of feet in amongst some scrub a little way from the path, and then furtive foot-steps creeping up behind him in the dark. He was a little man, and it was raining heavily at the time: just the night for a tragedy, he felt. But not wishing to invite trouble, he continued on his way, turning neither to left nor right. His pursuers drew nearer. Perhaps his suspicions were groundless, he thought, and not wishing to pass judgment on those behind him without first having proved conclusively that they were there for no good purpose, he decided to run. If t.hev were decent people like himself, thev would just naturally think that he was in a hurry So he put on speed. His pursuers followed suit. So he ran.
