NEW FROST RECORD.

COLDEST MORNING THIS WINTER. WATER PIPES FROZEN. Frozen water pipes and window panes heavily glazed with ice were the accompaniments of the record frost to which Christchurch people awoke this morning It was the coldest morning so far this winter. Many people however, tvere unaware that the weather man had created a new record for the year, for the morning did not seem quite so cold as have some that were experienced earlier in the year. The reason was that yesterday’s tine weather had permitted . the water to cle«u away, and save for shaded spots the streets and other open places had become fairly dry. The day broke brilliantly fin© and the discomforts of the frost were largely lost in the exhilaration of a bracing morning. There were 14.8 degrees of frost registered. These figures wiped out the short-lived record of yesterday morning when 12.9 degrees were registered. Prior to that the lowest reading for this winter was 11.9 degrees of frost registered on .Tune 5. May was responsible for six heavy frosts and so far three have gone down to the credit of June. The record of severe frosts so far this winter is: May 7 . . 5.3 degrees May 9 . .11.7 degrees May 10 . . 10-9 degrees May 19 . . 9.6 degrees May 2jJ . .11.5 degrees May 21 . . 7.9 degrees June 5 . .11.9 degrees June 17 . . 12.9 degrees June 18 . . 14.8 degrees A comparison of the minimum 5 thermometer readings for the past few months, with the corresponding readings for the same months last year indicate that the winter of 1925 has so far been colder than was that of 1924. The following table gives a comparison of the minimum readings in each of the. months stated : ‘ 1925. March 15 . . 27.0 degrees April 13 . 23. S degrees May 9 . . 20.3 degrees June 18 . . 17.2 degrees 1924. March 25 . . 37.1 degrees April 2S . . 21.7 degrees May 23 . . 21.7 degrees June 30 . . IS O degrees The mi limum readings for the other cold weather months of last year were* July 9, 16.7; August 9. 20.3; September 1, 23.1. October 24, 27.1. The record frost for last winter was 15.3 degrees recorded on July so that last night’s frost was within half a point of the record for last winter The hardest frost of which the Christchurch observatorv lias any record occurred on June 21, 1907, when 18 degrees of frost were registered.
