It was his first success for the season, after he had been placed nine times —seven second and two thirds. *• Bonlita, a cast-off from the Kemball stables, will in future race in the interests of Mr W. Whiteman, of Upper Hutt. lie is trained at Trentham by W. Young, who intends trying him over hurdles, but in his initial schooling effort this week made anything but a satisfactory showing. Returned visitors from Ellerslie expect Trespass to take high rank as a hurdle performer, and the prediction is offered that at his next outing he will be very prominent. He was going like a winner when he fell five furlongs from home in the Orakei Hurdles at the Auckland meeting.

The spell which was found necessary for the imported horse Royal Divorce has done the bay a power of good, and he is now one of the most commanding looking thoroughbreds in the Dominion. Ho has gone to Wanganui in the charge of his trainer, who uiso took the two Grand Parade fillies with him.

F. Davis arrived at Woodville yesterday, and took over the active members of Mr T. 11. Lowry’s team. At present it consists of Phoenix Park, Oreum and the champion Nigger Minstrel.

The Wellington owner, Mr J. A. Taylor, did not have any the best of the deal when he exchanged the Martian mare Dominant for the maiden Otauru. He was so disgusted with the form of the latter that he gave him away after the Levin meeting.

R. Hannon, the Cambridge ownertrainer, rarely travels away from the Auckland meetings with his team. Last week he was asked if there was any chance of this team coming to Trenjtham, but he‘shook his head, stating that he finds it too hard to win at Trentham.

According to a northern report, it is unlikely that Comical will visit Riccarton for the Grand National meeting. The present intention of his trainer is to finish the winter season at Trentham next month.

R. .T. Mason has such an uncanny way of winning Derbies—he has four A.J.C. blue ribands to his credit, to say nothing of innumerable New Zealand classics—that any rising three-vear-olds ho brings across in early winter, arouse no end of curiosity (says “Poseidon in the Sydney “ Sun ”). The last Derby lie won was with Cupidon ; other three-year-olds that he has brought hither in recent years have been sold. This trip Mason has with him Lucinda, an untried two-year-old by Martian from Lady Lucy, that Mr Greenwood purchased as a yearling for 160 guineas. Her year older brother was bought by Mr E. A. Connolly for 525 guineas, and passed on to Mr Sul Green. He lias not- yet done anything of distinction in Victoria, where he is known as Naos. Word from New Plymouth states that the jumpers Lochson and Alteration are both amiss, and can be counted out of early engagements. In the case of the former, his owner-trainer is trying to get him right lor the Trentham meeting, but the consensus of opinion amongst the track watchers is that there is little chance of the horse being right for the Wellington meetton yesterday, but when the'frost lifted a few horses were schooled over the steeplechase country. C-ashrnan (A. Peart) jumped three fences well. Evader (I. Tilson) was sent over the double twice and later with A. Weaver up acted as schoolmaster to Grim Joke (I. Tilson) over the same fences. Both fenced cleverly if not too cleanly. Apex (R. Cheat) was to have done a und over the big fences, but blundered badly at the first of the double giving his rider a shaking. lie was not i persevered with. * The three-year-old trotter Kawhaki • has left A. G. Wilson’s stable and will in future be trained in Auckland. Kawhaki was bred by Mrs M. Duncan and is by Nelson Bingen from Runaway. He was purchased by Mr V. Casey the Auckland sportsman, and went into A. G. Wilson’s stable at New Brighton. The New Brighton trainer educated and trained the young trotter as a two-year-old and the following f season Kawhaki showed exceptional speed, in fact he was probably the ) fastest trotter of his age ever seen in j the Dominion. Unfortunately he did not keep too sound and gave his train[er a good deal of trouble. He has ' only started cr. three occasions, winning | the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at | the Forbury Park Club’s meeting in \ January last, with the greatest of I ease. It is stated that the reason Kaj whaki is leaving his trainer’s charge is that Mr V. Casey has engaged a pri- * vate trainer for all his horses in AuckI land. Provided Kawhaki remains sound j he shouid not be long before he takes j high honours on the race track amongst » the trotting division. Kawhaki was shipped to Auckland last evening

It. Young has accepted a lucrative offer from a promiwnt Queensland sportsman and will leave Lyttelton tonight en route for Brisbane. There arc considerably fewer yearlings at exercise at Trentham this winter than has been the case for some years past. R. O’Donnell and S. Reid have each got three in regular work, but this is the lot with the exception of a couple belonging to Mr E. Riddiford, but which have not yet appeared on the tracks. The latest recruit to tho jumping brigade at Ellerslie is Right and Left, who was schooled orer pony hurdles last we ex. Right and Left gave a promising display.
