BREAKDOWN IN HEALTH.

MR C. H. OPIE RESIGNS FROM RIVER TRUST. As a result of a general breakdown in health, Mr C. 11. Opic. who has been a member of the Waimakariri River Trust since its inception, has been compelled to resign- Ho was formerly chairman of the oUI South Waimakariri River Board. The resignation was accepted at a special meeting of tho trust this morning and an extraordinary vacancy was declared. Air J. H. Blackwell presided in the unavoidable absence of the chairman, Air J. Wood, and there were also present:—Alessrs W. I*. Spencer, J. Leslie, F. G. Horrell and A- Manhire. A report was received from Dr W. E. Stevens, of New Brighton, that Mr Opie would be unable to act again on the trust as he had suffered a general breakdown in health. Air Blackwell, in moving that the resignation be. accepted with regret and

that the trust- place on record its appreciation of Mr Opie’s services, said lie regretted very much that the resignation was necessary. Air Opic had u fine record both in educational and other matters. All through Canterbury lie was an.esteemed and respected man and the. public owed him a. debt of gratitude for his work in the public interest. The members of the trust regretted exceedingly that owing to the state of his health lie. had found it necessary to resign his position and extended to him their greatest sympathy and the hope that ho would be restored to healthMr Spencer seconded the motion and endorsed Air Blackwell’s remarks v Ho said that on the old South WaTmaknriri Board and ; on the Education Board and other public bodies, Air Opie had been a keen and useful member and perhaps at some future time lie might be able to come back again. Messrs Alanhire. Leslie, and Horrell also endorsed the chairman’s remarks and the motion was then carried. The secretary, Mr C. AY. Hervey, was appointed returning officer for the election, which is to bo held within twe n l y-c igh t da vs. TWO CANDIDATES FOR VACANCY. Mr J. A. Flesher. cx-Mayor of Christchurch, and ATr F. E. Jones, who was chairman of the South AYaimaknriri River Board at the time it was merged in the trust, stated this morning that they would be candidates for tho scat rendered vacant by Air Opie’s resignation.
