Shirley-St. Albans Notes.

LOU NOIL ELECTION S. Bt Albans and Shirley residents turned out in big fore© on. "Wednesday to vote for their favourites on the council. At each of the booths the congestion was very marked, especially during the last hour. Much comment has been mad© locally as the. result of the poll, as St Albans and Shirley arc without a local representative 011 the council. Mr 'A. Williams, after eighteen years’ service on the council, was defeated. Mr. R. B Dailey, who was standing, for the council for the first time, just failed to register the right number of votes. Mr J AY. Beauland Avas also a councillor for a number of years. So the local residents are left lamenting, after having representatives on the council sine© the amalgamation, of the borough with the ei ty. ST. ALBANS RECREATION CLUB. This club, which caters for the men and boys of the. district, and has its hall in AYinton Street, held its annual meeting last w-eek. The annual report, which was presented, stated that the roll call was, 108 active arid 12 life members. The balance-sheet showed that the club AA-as in a- flourishing condition- A sinking fund has been provided for paying the mortgage on the hall, and'club rooms. The conveniences for members have been, increased and at present a series of interclub matches is being a rranged. The gymnasium, under Mr Graham©, is largely used. ST. ALBANS SCHOOL. The first meeting of the new committee was held on. Tuesday. There w ore present; Messrs G. Sey, G. Grover, G. C. Claridge, E. J. Hayes, O. J. AA , AA illcox, the on’y members nominated at the annual meeting Air. G. T. Hillsdon, who was also

present, agreed to act as secretary , until a. member of the committee was appointed at the next meeting. Mr.' G. O. Soy was appointed cbair- » man of the committee. The following were elected to fill the four vacancies on the committee: Messrs. A. Hyland, L. <>. Collette, F. i Brierley and T. H. Moore. JOTTINGS. The schools opened this week ad, according to the reports from Shirley- and St Albans head masters, the attendance is not up to the average, but indica tions point to the* number increasing during the coming week. The Victory Memorial School opened under the new head master, Mr J. H. Worboys. All the classes show an improvement in attendance. Miss Barnett has been appointed relieving teacher in the absence of Mrs Bowles, who returns next month. All the Sunday Schools open to-mor-row. The Edgeware Road Wesley Sunday School is holding a special thanksgiving service and all parents and children are invited to be present. Complaints have been made that the seat, for the use of tramwav passengers at the corner of Warrington Street and Edgeware Road, has all the asphalt worn away in front of it and that in wet weather one is sitting in a sea of mud. It is hoped that the matter will be attended to before the bad weather rets in. Mr T. P. Moore, who has been chairman of the St Albans School for many years, has resigned and Mr G. Sey lias been appointed in his place. Mr 0. S. Thompson has been again appointed chairman of the Shirley School Committee. It was reported at the householders’ meeting that a permanent caretaker has been appointed. This appointment should give satisfaction to both parents and scholars. Dr Thacker has promised a water fountain for the Shirley grounds. On Tuesday evening a surprise party ■visited Mrs T. H. Elmes, 91, Caledonian Road, to celebrate her birthday. It also afforded an opportunity for friends \ to meet her mother, Mrs V. Warr, j .also Mr and Mrs R. Warr, recent ar- * rivals from the Old Country. The visit- ‘ ing partv were Mr and Mrs T.
