EVENTS OF THE WEEK

THE GALA. A committee meeting was held in the Library on Thursday evening. The I Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) presided. It was decided to hold the gala on Saturday, May 9. Mr J. 11. Shaw was appointed treasurer and Mr Sugden secretary and advertising agent. A special feature of the Gala will be the great skj- glider, a source of endless amusement and thrills. "Wonderland will be re-opened. Undoubtedly since everything is in readiness and good weather is predicted the Gala should be a verysuccessful function. PRESENTATION TO MR WARD. At the meeting of householders on Monday evening a presentation, on behalf of the retiring committee, was made to Mr F. Ward, who retired from the school committee after sixteen years’ service. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), in making the presentation, referred to Mr Ward's consistent service, and stressed the fact that, during the whole of the long period he had been on the committee, he had not missed one single meeting. The text of the address was as follows-“To MiFrank Ward—Wc, the undersigned, members of the New Brighton School Committee, wish to place on record our high appreciation of the long and valuable services which you have rendered to the district. For sixteen years you have served on the school committee. acting for nine years as secretarv, and six as chairman. Your attendance at every meeting is evidence of con sistent. and loyal service, which has won the commendation of all concerned. The householders assembled also passed a unanimous vote of thanks to Mr Ward lor his good work. DOGS. The question put to Councillor Shaw on Tuesday regarding -dogs was in humorous vein. Behind the question, however, is the fact that this nuisance is one that is growing notwithstanding the raids made up to the present. The new council should give the matter immediate attention and in this connection it may be well for those who own dogs which they value, to keep them off the street beiorc an edict goes forth that all strays must "go west." BOWLING CLUB. With regard to final play in the Williams Shield, and handicap singles, arrangements arc being made to ge.t these competitions finished on Saturday. on the Canterburv green. part of which is still available for plav this season. SURF CLUB. The Surf Club has been unfortunate enough to have their buo.v which is used in competition work, washed awav i'rom its moorings. Should anyone know of its whereabouts they ' will ERN. M’Celland, 35-30; Mcsdames Ball 32-32; Stokes 32-32: Busch 1 32-31; Burmeister 31-30, M’Celland 31. Miss R. M’Celtand won a point for the Senior Gold Pennant. Miss L Tillvshort. a nromising junior, registered 29. Competition for the Tisdall Button and Junior Pendant begins HOCKEY CLUB. The Hockey Club held a very successful hard-up social in the ‘‘Oasis’’ on ! Thursday evening. Mr J. IT. Shaw (president) awarded the first prize for the best hard-up costume to Miss Eilleen Herrick, as a sundowner, and the second to Miss Walls, as a beggar girl. The iced cake guessing competition was won by Miss G. Foote. The opening match of the season will be played at HagQey Park to-day. PLUXKET SOCIETY. The Plunket Society held its fortnightly euchre cm Wednesday evening, the winners being: —Ladies—First, Mrs Winter; second. Mrs Weir, and consolation. Mrs Kershaw; gentlemen—First, Mr Winter; second, Mr W. Goodman, and consolation. Mr 11. Bellamy. Y.P.T.U. The New Brighton members of the Yoilng Peoples’ Temperance Union met at the residence of Mrs Gibb, j Lonsdale Street, for their monthlymeeting. the president. Mrs F. j\f. Mitchell, being in the chair. Routine business and correspondence was dealt with. The clelega tes report ot the recent W.C.T.U. annual convention, was given, and proved most interesting and instructive. Several items weic given during the evening. Those contributing being: Mrs F. M. Mitchell, Misses M. Lightbody, T. Buxton, G. and A. Gibb, and B. Nelson. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the hostess. EUCHRE EVENINGS. The Croquet Club held their usual fortnightly euchre on Wednesday last. The prizes vent io Mrs It road belt, Mrs. Ragg, Mr Cooke and Mr Smith. The ‘‘Happy Hours” Whist Club drive was hold on Thursday last in the Pier Hal!. A very enjoyable evening was spent. Prizewinners were Mrs I)e Roo and Mrs. Ransom. consolation prizes being awarded to Mrs Hav and Mrs Ware. The Bcresford Club again he’d a successful evening on Tuesday. The prizewinners were Mrs Ardern and Air Frost. PRESBYTER l AX til URCJH . A social evening was held on Friday-, the Rev J. S. Young presiding. man expressed the high appreciation 1 of the congregation for the special | services rendered by Mr. Arthur .Bruce as treasurer for ten years, and a presentation of a large oil painting, painted by Mr. Jones, South Brighton, was made by Mr Bruce. Solos were rendered by Misses Langley, Light- J body, Ailsa West, and Mr Pearce, j duet by Mr and Mrs West, recitation ; bv Mr Bert Goodland, and pianoforte solos by Miss Gibb. Supper brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Harvest thanksgiving services, which were postponed owing to the epidemic, will be held to-morrow. In the morning, the Rev J. S. Young will preach, and Miss Langley will sing a solo. In Hie evening the Rev J. I>. Webster, of S. David’s, will preach. Mr "Bills will ""sing, and a quartette will be given by Mr and Mrs West, Miss Eaglesome 1 and Mr Bills. The evening hour of service is altered to 6.30 for the winter months. The church will be decorated, and the many gifts of produce sent in will be sold later, along with work done by the Ladies’ Association. The Presbyterian Sunday School at Central Brighton and North Beach will reopen to-morrow, and also the various . Bible classes. BEACH CHURCH. At. the Beach Church, the services on Sunday will be as follow: —Holy Communion, at S a.m. : Matins and Holy Communion, at 11 a.m.; and Evensong at 7 p.m. The vicar, the Rev. C. W. I. MacLavertyr, will conduct the services. There will also he an Evensong service at the North Beach schoolroom, in charge of Mr F. .1. 1,. Scott. The Sunday School will reopen at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow. METHODIST CHURCH. Successful anniversary services were held on Sunday last at the Methodist Church, the leading feature being iiio delightful singing of an enlarged choir, forty strong, under Air Murray Jones. On Tuesday last an enjoyable tea meeting was held in the. classroom. after which reports of various branches of the church work were given, and again members of the choir made the gathering brighter by various solos. To-morrow the preachers will be Mr. J. H. Pugli in the morning. and at G. 30 the Rev. F. T. Read. The choir will render Jackson’s “To Deuni,” and Mrs Bennington will sing “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” At South Brighton Hall a special service * will he held at three o’clock to cele- | hr ate the reopening of the Sunday School and services. ON HIT. That the candidates' meeting was a very good one indeed. ‘One of the best vet held, and carried out in very good spirit,” was the general comment. That widespread regret is expressed on account of the retirement of Councillor Muirson from the council. That the candidates’ speeches on Tuesday night were, on the average, exceptionally good. That on Anzac Day the Territorials, under Captain Ooe. and the Senior Cadets, under Captain Hopkins, were very well turned out considering the short notice. That Mr. Dailey’s first effort in the borough as returning officer was a complete success. Many thanks are due to him for the quick announcement of the results. That the re-election of Air J. The annual meeting of householders was well attended. Prior to the usual business, the chairman (Mr E. Leaver) introduced Dr MMntvre. who gave a most interesting ami instructive address on the benefits to the health of the children of fresh air schools. A , hearty vote of thanks was passed to X>r M'lntyre and later in the evening a resolution in favour of fresh air cbiss rooms was carried unanimously. The committee was recommended to call for tenders for asphalting a portion of the school grounds. All the retiring committee nominated were reelected. The new committee consists of Mrs S. G. Goring. I The fact of a polling booth being in the city for New Brighton voters J undoubtedly affected the number of I votes recorded at North Beach. The success of the candidates from North Roach is gratifying to the district. Alessrs F. .7. !,. Scott and TL Snell have been good workers for all efforts appertaining to the welfare' of the district and should prove themselves good councillors.
