HERTZOG’S DESIRE. WOULD BE DISASTER. Received April 29. 12.55 p.;n.) APETOWN, Apnl 28 During the Budget debate in the Assembly. General Hertzog made an important declaration on „he secession question. He said that, personally, ne thought .so far as the union of South Africa was concerned, secession would be a flagrant mistake and be a national disaster if caused by one section either British or Dutch, imposing its will on the other. lie did not fear chat secession would arise so long as each section retrained from asserting to superiority or dominance over the other. General Ilertzog urged that no attempt should be made by either section to use the British connection tj establish such superiority. Referring to the Budget proposals, the Premier favoured the policy ct Government protection of local indus•r~es and the opening or markets for South African products.
