DE GARIS CASE.
EXTRADITION GRANTED. TO SAIL BY MARAMA. Per Press Association'. AUCKLAND. February 5. Clement John do Garis appeared he fore Mr J. AY. Poynton. S.M., at the Police Court this
morning, when an order for extradition was issued. Senior Detective Ward, who conducted the case. stated m evidence that on January 13, in company with Detectives M’Hugh and O’Brien, he effected the arrest of De Garis on hoard the Maheno. De Garis
was n second-class passenger, going under the name of Martin Ernest lies lie. He said to him. " l have a war rant for the arrest of Clement John De Garis for false pretences at North Mel bourne, and I believe you are De Garis.” The accused replied. “My name is Leslie. H<=* then said. “I am satisfied that you are De Garis. You will he arrested.” De Garis then stated that his name was De Garis. He had £375 Ss 3d in his possession, and also letters to Australian firms, signed. “ Leslie, on route to Honolulu.” M ir-hael Joseph Davey, senior detective, stationed at Melbourne, gave evidence. and produced a warrant given and signed bv Air Cohen, a Police’Magistrate at Melbourne, for the arrest of De Garis on a charge of obtaining £3OO by false pretences. The accused was the person named in the warrant. Detective Davey then asked for the return of the accused to Melbourne, where, he said, lie could prove the Mr Moody: The information was a private one? Detective Davey: A'es, that’s so. The Magistrate remanded De Garis to appear in Melbourne, a warrant of extradition to issue. De Garis. in the charge of Detective Davey. will leave to-morrow by the Marama for Sydney.
