WITH GREAT REGRET

GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND CANCELLED VISIT. A LETTER TO THE MAYOR. Th® following: letter has been received by the Mayor from the GovernorGeneral : Dear Mr Mayor T am very «=orrv indeed that circumstances should have prevented our visit to Christchurch for the present. Both Her Excellency and T were looking: forward to it very much, and we arc very disappointed that it should have to be postponed. T thought it as well to ask you to gibe your opinion frankly, because I understood well the difficulty in which you must have found yourself. and thought it better to give you a lead in case the risk of possible infection of the children had become more fully recognised since the programme was arranged. As a matter of fact, this morning I have been officially advised by Ministers. after consultation with the Health Department, that it is inadvisable for me to pay any official visits at the present time. Apart from the disappointment to ourselves, T very much regret all the. trouble to which you and others have been put in making arrangements which have now to be cancelled and T hope you will take any opportunity which you may have to express to them bur thanks for the welcome which they were so kindly proposing to give us, and our deep regret that this must now be postponed. Believe me. yours sincerely, CHARLES FERGUSSON.
