Lambing has now commenced along the foothills in the Rakaia Gorge, and seagulls are reported to be doing a lot of damage. A visitor to the gorge saw a seagull attacking a newly-born lamb, and the runholdrr assured him that ho had seen one of the birds the udder right off a ewe that was actually lambing. All the shepherds are carrying guns t,o combat the pest. Numbers .of cases are being reporter] from time to time in which seagulls pick the eyes out of both ewes and lambs when the animals are down.
