EVENTS OF THE WEEK By Our Special Correspondent.

THE GALA. 1023. The first meeting in connection with the gala was held on Tuesday evening, and presided over by the Alayor (Air J. Gamble). The following ladies and gentlemen were formed into a general committee, with power to add to their number: —Alesdames J. Gamble. H. A. Ragg, AV. Barnett, Alessrs H. A. Ragg, A. AY. Owles, J. A. Scott, G. T. Robinson, H. A. Glasson, H. Throp, A. P. Hopkins, C. A. Cooper, X. Prebble, AY. L. A. Taylor, J. H. Shaw, H. Stokes, Franklin, 11. Arden, AY. Hill. It was decided to hold the gala in January, 1925. The question of the date, and many other details were held over pending the decision of the council committee regarding the appointment of a summer programme organiser, who it has been suggested, should also organise and do the secretarial work of the gala. It was decided that the net profits should be spent exclusively upon beach improvements, and that later a sub-com-mittee from the general committee should be set up to confer with .the council as to the details of expenditure. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Air D. G. Sullivan, AI.P. ; president, the Alayor 'Mr J. Gamble) : vice-presidents, all exAlayors of the borough, present councillors. Drs AY. E. Stevens and AY. T. Glasgow, and presidents of all sports bodies. PLUNKET SOCIETY. During tho next six weeks the Plunket nurse will be at the library on Mondays only. .After that a nurse will ho in attendance daily at New Brighton. This is a condition the local society has aimed for. ANCIENT HISTORY. Captain A. AY. Owles has in his possession a balance-sheet of tne New Brighton aquatic sports (the then gala) of which lie was secretary, thirty years ago. Captain Owles is still taking an active part in affairs, and is a vicepresident of the coming gala, by virtue of his office as president of several clubs. In the light of present day-balance-sheets that of thirty years ago is interesting, and shows the great changes that have taken place. 'I he receipts, including trophies, and subscriptions, amounted to £27 lls 9d, while- the prize list amounted to £2O 6s Od. RAND CONCERT. Although the weather was most unpleasant the band concert arranged by the Mayor was a great success, and very enjoyable. It is understood that Derry’s Band collected in the region of £l4. PERSONAL. Air A. AT. Olivers having purchased the freehold of the Bower Hotel, is having extensive alterations and additions carried out there. Alaster Bert Good I and has received word that in the recent Trinity College examinations lie had passed with honours in the senior division (elocution section). 130 AY LING CLUB. The committee of the Bowling Club met on Thursday evening. Air F. E. Barrett presided. It was decided to enter one team in the four rink championship, and one team in the three rink pennant. Air F. D. Muirson was appointed umpire, pro tem. About thirty entries were received for the progressive rink tournament. VOLUNTEER. FIRE BRIGADE!. The half-yearly inspection of the fire brigade, by the Fire Prevention Committee, took place in the station on Monday evening. There was a- full attendance of members under Superintendent R. A. Stokes. After the inspection the brigade held its’ monthly meeting, when it was decided to hold the inter-borough contest with Sumner on November 1, and to hold the brigade competitions on November 8. LADIES’ MINI ATUR E R J FI,E CLUB. On Friday evening tho club’s team visited the Ward’s Brewery range and fired a friendly match with the Ward’s ladies’ team. The Brighton team won by 250 to 228. The highest scores at the weekly practice were: -Alesdames Aloses 34, AJasliian 33, AUClcilaml 31. Ball 31, Buschl 30, Burmoister 30, Bishop 30, and Aliss Park 31. Airs Aloses secured one point for the junior club pendant and Tisdale brooch, and Aliss Park and Airs Al’Clelland one each for the senior club pendant. On Tuesday evening a friendly match was fired against the AYaikuku ladies’ club’s team, at AYaikuku. The Brighton team won by 550 to 492. ANGLICAN CHURCH. On Sunday the A'iear will conduct the usual services at the Beach Church, and in the evening the choir will con-tribute-.the anthem, “Saviour, Breathe an Evening Blessing.” The first euchre party was held in the church schoolroom on AA’ednesdav. Some members of the Beresford Club kindly gave their assistance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The prizewinners were : Ladies—Airs Samson and Airs do Roo; gentlemen—Air Spedding and Alt* Cockle. Consolation prizes, Aliss Knight and Air Poppawell. Final arrangements have now been made for tho grand concert to be given in Joy land this evening. Twenty members of the Kiwi Sunshine Players will contribute a very full and varied programme, and a successful evening is assured. METHODIST CHURCH. The Rev AY. AYalker, who is visiting Christchurch on chaplaincy business, has been the guest of All* J. A. Cooke, Nelson Street. The Rev F. T. Read will conduct both services at the Union Street Ohurcli to-morrow. The subject in the evening will be “The Right King of Faitli.” l he choir, under Air Taylor, will render the anthem, “Sweet is the Sunlight,” and Air F. H. Christian and Aliss o. Christian will sing Jude’s setting of “When f Survey.” Air AA . G. Sincock, the gifted organist of the Church has just been successful in passing the practical examination for A.T.C.L. on the organ. - PRESBYTERIAX C HURGH. At the morning service the special addresses on the life of Elijah are being continued, the subject to-morrow being “The Still Small Voice.” In the evening there will be a study. of “Christian Communism in the Early Cliurch, and and its dangers.” The Rev J. S. Young will conduct both THE “8.C.C.” Another club has been formed in New Brighton, and one of a unique character. It lias been composed of twenty boys owning carts, trolleys and

I toy motors, the body being called the J Brighton Cart Club. The prospectus * sets out. “The object of the club is to create more interest in cart racing, thereby inducing physical development, and to enable members to have amusements, such as picnics, together, besides fostering a great spirit of friendship and unity between the members/’ Captain A. Owles lias accepted the position of patron. The club has adopted a monogram in the form of a rising sun, with the letters B.C.C. inside. One thing is certain, the club will not be popular if it confines its activities to the footpath of Sea view Bead during business hours. BERESFORD CLUB. The weekly euchre party and dance of the Beresford Club was held in the Anglican Church schoolroom last Tuesday. There was a large attendance, the prize-winners were:—Mrs Ran som 1, Mrs Mere 2; Air A. Streeter 1. Mr Derrett 2. Consolation prizes went to Mrs Streeter and* Mr J. PoSOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. A farewell social was given to Air and Airs A\ . Gibson last AVednesday, in the South Brighton Hall, on the occasion of their leaving the district, and a most enjoyable evening was spent in games, dancing and community singing. * After supper Air and Mrs Gibson were presented with a clock, and tea set, by Air K, Campbell, president of the Progress I,eague, on behalf of their many friends in South Brighton. A meeting of the North Beach and M aimairi Burgesses’ Association was field on .Monday evening, Air D. Wilson presiding. It was decided to convene a conference of the three interested Associations in order to obtain concerted action regarding the tram connection between Craddock’s corner and Warring- * ton Street. A gathering was held at “ Saltaire,” the residence of Air and Airs Dixon on Saturday afternoon last to welcome Airs Goring, who has come to North Beach to further the work of the Baptist Church. On Aloud ay afternoon the members of the Forestry Dengue visited New Brighton, where they were met by the Alayor (Air J. Gamble) and Councillors Leaver and Scott. Air E. Langford piloted the visitors through Rawhiti Domain. The party afterwards visited Pleasant Point plantation, and all expressed themselves agreeably surprised with both plantations. At Burwood the party visited the plantation of AU Alatheson, at one time owned by the late Edward Reece. PERSONAL. Air J. F. Wilson, hcrioia.'ter of North Beach School, left for AVellington on r l hursday evening on educational business. Air Frank Alabaster, son of Air J. E.
