SHIRLEY-ST ALBANS NOTES.

(Special to the “ Star.”) THIS GARDEN SUBURB. A general feeling of satisfaction is felt in the district after the refreshing rain on Tuesday night and the gardens have benefited very materially, idle lawns are growing very fast. ST ALBANS SCHOOL CONCERT. Something like a record for the district were the takings for the concert held for the benefit of the district school funds last week. Just under £3O was taken. The concert will he repeated with the addition of pictures in the second part on October 7. ODDFELLOWS LODGE. The Jx>yal Benevolent Lodge M.U.i. 0.0. K.. held its quarterly summoned meeting last Monday, Brother V. Rolton, N.G., presiding. One member was declared on the sick fund. 'The sum of £1 Is was donated to the Public Hospital Radium fund. P.G. Brother Hillsdon reported on the business transacted at the last meeting of the Burgesses’ Association Queen Committee and appealed to the members to support the official Queen of the Oddfellows by buying badges and supporting the concert on October 2. The white degree was conferred on Brother G. T. Glover. PG. Brother Hillsdon acting as conductor and being supported by D.D.G.M. Brother James and P.G. Brother Heigh. ST ALBANS SCHOOL FAIR. The Ladies’ Committee have decided to hold a cooking competition in connection with the fair and have arranged the following contests : —Small cyi.kes; scones : (a) white, (b) brown ; jam sponge sandwich; loaf bread: (a) white, (b) brown; pastry; bread, ma~ deira cake; fruit cake; seed cake; fancy sponge; pastry. TRAMWAY STOPPING PLACE. Complaints have been received of the trains entering the. loop at fixlgeware Road and almost stopping and then going on again when the town tram enters the loop. Several narrow escapes have been reported o elderly people. CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND FUND The St Albans children’s public playground movement is now reaching top speed, and a large number of committees and sub-committees are active. Art unions, dance socials, concerts, picture shows and private entertainments, are becoming general. Mrs Palmer, M’Fadden’s Road, gave a social and card evening, at her residence, in aid of the work stall. The function was most enjoyable and attracted a large gathering. On Thursday evening, Mrs I. Robinson, Colombo Street, gave a euchre party and dance in the Win ton Street Hall, in aid of her stall. This function drew a large gathering and realised a substantial sum for the fund. ' On Tuesday evening last a card evening was held in the howling club pavilion for the benefit of the bowling club queen. There were about sixty present and a very enjoyable evening was spent. COMING WEEK S ACTIVITIES. Next Thursday a first class concert will be held in the St Matthew’s schoolroom. The complete programme will be found elsewhere.
