WIRELESS TALK TO AUSTRALIA.

NEW SHORT-WAVE SYSTEM. LOW POWER USED. (Special tc the "Star.”) LONDON,- June 6. WiTcliess telephony between Great Britain and Australia by means of a new non-directional short-wave system is an accomplished fact. Senators Marconi explained the results of his experiments to a " Daily Chronicle” representative last night at Marconi House, and they indicate that we are on the eve of a remarkable development in commercial wireless highspeed telegraphy and telephony to all parts of the world. ‘' On 'Sunday we carried out some tests from Poidhu,” said Senatore Marconi, “ without utilising what is called the ‘ Beam system ’ but utilising many features of that system, so that the electrical waves were not directed to any particular part of the globe. “ During th© tests the speech transmitted was clearly heard by Mr E. T. Fisk, managing director of the Amalgamated Wireless of Australasia, on an ordinary homo valve receiving apparatus, near Sydney. "We are also informed that Mr J. H. Thompson, of the Canadian Marconi company, heard this speech in Montreal. “ This is the first time such telephony has been carried on between England and Australia by this particular niethu I have no doubt that when the beam system is utilised with the same waves that we have been using for this non-directional system, the results will he in every way satisfactory, and that it will be available for high speed telegraphy and telephony between England and Australia and other parts of the world.”

Senatore Marconi stated that power upon which the Sunday experimental messages were transmitted was only 20 kilowatt (between 20 and 25 horsepower) . 11 But although we shall certainly follow this up, my expectations are largely based upon the beam system,” said the inventor. "I believe that with a highly directional (beam) system, where the wireless energy is not spread all over the earth, but is concentrated along one path, we shall accomplish the same results with about one-tenth of a kilowatt of power.” Mr Godfrey Isaacs, of the Marconi Company, intimated that they wet® prepared to erect stations in this coun-

try for the new system of transmission the moment they obtained the fa cility for so doing, and they were also quite ready to do so in other countries. (By the beam'system to which Senator© Marconi referred it would be possible to save about 90 per cent in constructional costs and to talk to Australia by using about one-tenth of a kilowatt power.)
