To-Morrow’s Games

SPORTING FORECAST OF RESULTS

LEAGUE RUGBY. TO-MORROW’S FIGTURES. Afarists A v. Hornby, at Sydenham Park ; referee. Mr T. Kirton. Addington v. Woolston, at the Addington reserve; referee, Mr H. Read. Linwood v. Marists B. at Lin woo 1 Park; referee. Mr E. Geary. The competitions will be advanced a further stage to-morrow afternoon, and with favourable conditions there should be some interesting matches. The principal attraction will be tha game between the Hornby and Marists A team at- Sydenham Park, and from the fact that there was a record attendance tor a local club contest at Sydenham last week, should the climatic conditions be favourable a largo attendance should again be in evidence to-morrow afternoon. Marists supporters will not hear of the team being beaten, but Hornby field a husky pack of forwards who tackle well and have the speed, and they should control the ball in the scrum. The backs are safe rather than tricky, with a speedy three-quarter trio, but the line is not solid on defence. and. though the team possesses a clever half-back, there is not the cohesion and anticipation of play that is characteristic of the Greens. It should be a good game, and if Hornby tackle as soundly as they are capable of they should give Marists a close game. 4 Addington should not have any difficulty in beating Woolston. whom they meet on the Addington Reserve. The game should afford Addington with the opportunity to improve their fielding and close cohesion, the lack of which was in evidence against Marists. The Wools to ni tea will have 'to tackle soundly to check then - opponents, but the game should give them the opportunity of building up their team play. Marists B play Limvood Linwood Park, and it is stated that the eastern suburbs, with their reorganised team, expect to be in it at the finish. All supporters of the code will welcome the effort of the Linwood to improve their team, but it may be that want of cohesion and training will place them at a disadvantage. Iho Marists team who aro improving each week and whose members have boon training consistently should bo able to hold their own. An alteration in the’playing grounds from the list published has been made in the M oolston anti Sydenham third grade teams who will play at Woolston Park at three o'clock and not as previously published at Beckenham Park Next week’s matches are Hornby and Sydenham, at Sydenham Park, Linwood and Woolston, at Woolston Park, and Addington and Marists B at the Addington Reserve. Marists A who have the bye, will he playing the City Club at Auckland, the latter having drawn the bye in the northern League premiership fixtures. NOTES. Fne crack Auckland Rugby Union fuh-oack of last season, G. Gregory, xias formed the Auckland Marists League team, and J. O’Brien, wno was an Auckland Rugby Union forward and who was spoken of as a likely New Zealand representative, is also playing tor AJarists League team. ‘ The secretary of the Auckland League wired the local secretary yesteidav that great interest was being taken in the visit of the Marists team to play City there next Saturday and that a record attendance was expected. New Zealanders will hear with regret that that fine fooballer and great swim mer, R; R. Craig, lias been seriously ill in Sydney. 5 Ibe Marists hare been training hard for their fixture against the City team at Auckland next week. It i s hi scrum work that the Greens will he at a disadvantage. HORNBY CLUB. Seniors v. Marists A—J. Parks, W. Stewart, R. M’Gregor, R. Thompson, B. Keene J. Molfoy. A. Mackay, V/. L. TO-MORROW'S GAMES. The struggle- for championship honours in .the Canterbury f ootball Association's first grade competition has' never been* more pronounced than in the present season. Tile constant reshutrung of the positions of the teams in the league table emphasises the fact that the contestants are of remarkable even strength. In the draw for to'morrov the teams are about as well matched as they possibly could be, and some great games are promised. English Park will be the venue of the match between Villa and Rangers, and m this contest there is a prospect of sensational happenings. Bo fa teams are capable of producing brilliant footi ball, but at the same time their form j this season would suggest the erratic : j clement. As in previous seasons Ran- ! gers are again slow in striking winning ! form, and their display against Nomads last week was entirely disappointing. On the other hand Villa have alreadydefeated Nomads, and this fact must be taken into consideration in tomorrow’s engagements. The Rangers’ 1 selectors are not likely to again try I experiments with the team as they did \ in.st week, and a superior combination should result. If A ilia arc able to produce their strongest team they should prevail by a small margin. A great game should eventuate on th© Mental Hospital ground where Sunnyside meet Western. Both teams aro so far unbeaten, but bv drawing with Thistle last week Sunnyside are a point behind their opponents. In style both teams play a very similar game, and as they are about‘tho best trained in the competition the pace should be a cracker from beginning to end. Following their football tour across Cook Strait. Sunnyside should be very fit and they will be eager to avenge the defeat inflicted on them bv Vestern last season. As leaders of th-i competition. Western can be expected to make a desperate stand, but Sunnyside should have a goal in hand at the call of time. Lyttelton will need to be at their best if they intend to make further progress in the league table at the ! expense of Thistle. They will have 1 the advantage of playing on their own ! ground at Officers’ Point, and this I may be the deciding factor in n streuu- 1 ou.s game. But the Thistle team i s j vastly superior to that which did duty | last season, for in almost everv do- | panment it has been immensely strengthened. The .Scots will be without |

Callaghan in goal, for he has been transferred to Sunnyside, and his position will be hard to fill satisfactorily. Partly on this account and the fine defence of the watersiders, the chances of Lyttelton must be considered, but their margin of superiority should not exceed the odd goal. Kaiapoi commenced their ascent of the championship ladder by defeating Villa on the suburban ground last week and their improved form on that occasion would suggest that they should have little anxiety as to the outcome of their engagement with Y.M.C.A. tomorrow. But the. latter were defeated by such a, narrow margin in their last match against a strong Western side that their prospects must not be entirely disregarded. Where pace and stamina are concerned the local team should be quite the equal of the opposition, but it is questionable if it possesses the requisite finishing power to land a win. Y.M.C.A. have got a fine defence and Kaiapoi will find in it a difficult obstacle to surmount in their quest for goals. In their matches Ivaiapoi have revealed a certain weakness in a section of their defence, and if the visitors become acquainted with it early in the game and act accordingly they wiil not come away goal-less. But it is difficult to see Kaiapoi defeated in this match, and they should pass on with a couple of goals to spare. The meeting of St Albans and Nomads at Richmond Park brings visions of a memorable Cup-tie of last year, for it was on this ground that Nomads received their quietus at the hands of St Albans in the most sensational match of the season. It is not expected that St Albans will re-stage their famous achievement in to-mor-row's engagement for the Saints are in desperate need of players of ability at the present juncture. A big effort is being made to produce a team to-mor-row that will worthily uphold the traditions of the club, but it is doubtful if it will be strong enough to seriously extend such a fine combination as is Nomads. That Nomads are not invincible has already been proved, and this fact should lend confidence to their opponents, b*ut the penetrative power of Nomads’ attack, once it settles down should decide the question/ and they are expected to romp home winners by a fairly substantial margin. THE RUGBY GAME. SATURDAY'S MATCHES. What may be described as one of the greatest events in club matches this season will be playea at Lancaster Park tomorrow afternoon,* "hen the vwo famous teams, Christchurch and Old Boys, will meet ou the oval. The enthusiasm which has been worked up in anticipation o'' this match is very great. Both te&ma aro at the top of their form, and both have a sprinkling of possible "All Blacks." The faet. open play which is characteristic of both teams w!TI no doubt result in a spectacular and exciting contest. Neither team has been defeated R) far this season, both standing equ tCi in championship honours. Special provision seating- accommodation for spectators arriving- early. ALBION CLUB. Seniors v.
