BRILLIANT ASSEMBLAGE.

There was a bViJlinnt assemblage of 2000 guests at Buckingham Palace State ball in honour of the Rumanian King and Queen. Those present included King Georg© and Queen Mary, the Prince of Wales, Prince and Princess Arthur of Connaught and the London representatives of tho dominions. The ball was the most brilliant Court function since pre-war days. The first guests arrived in broad daylight and then a continuous steam filled the State apartments from ininef o’clock onwards. The palace had been lavishly decorated with masses of rambler roses and blue hydrangeas. The scene in the ballroom v*as a dazzling display of colour and jewels when the Royal procession, headed by the two Kings and Queens, entered. Their ; Majesties immediately led a stately 1 quadrille cVlionncur with which State | balls always open. The hand then j played a waltz tune and dancers filled the floor. Queen Mary More a gown of shot silver and pink liamane tissue, heavily embroidered in diamonds and pearls, with the Crown diamonds in which were set the lesser “Stars of Africa,” cut from the famous Cullman diamond.
Still another case -of the “ borrowing ” of a motor-car has been brought to notice. On Tuesday evening Mr William Hay, of Timaru. who was staying at tho Clarendon, left bis fiveskater car outside the lintel, nnd on returning lm found it had disappeared.
