SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES. The method of nominating candidates for school committees was discussed by the Canterbury Education Board again to-day. Mr E. id. Andrews moved that the Education Act should be altered to allow supplementary nominations for members of school committees to be taken at the annual meetings of householders, as well as written nominations. He said that at St Albans there was an insufficient number nominated by writing, and that it was impossible to nominate others. Mr AY. P. Spencer seconded the motion. Mr C. S. Thompson said that the method suggested by Mr Andrews would be advisable in a country district, but Ihe present method had advantages in the cities, as under it inquiries could be made as to the men offered for service on school committees. In country districts all candidates were well known personally. Air AV. A. Banks said that he favoured the present method, and Air A. JPeverill said that it helped to prevent faction-fighting. The motion, on a show of fiands, was lost. The board will obtain an opinion from its solicitors as to whether a man can preside at a meeting of householders in a district in which he does not reside and exercise his casting vote on questions raised at that meeting. The question was brought up by a complaint in respect to the election of the Papanui committee. The secretary of the Woolston School Committee wrote in regard to the dispute as to the election of the committee. and stated that here had been a protest. The hoard decided that as there was nothing definite it could only receive the ! etter.
