SIX MERRY WIDOWS.
TOUR ROUND PACIFIC. (Special to the “Star.”)' AUCKLAND, May 15. Purely “Pacific” in every sense is the ocean tour now being made by a party of six American widows who reached Auckland yesterday by the Ulimaroa from Sydney, thus completing one stage of an extremely pleasant j jaunt around the lauds of the southern There is a general impression that even two women can never agree, but these six wpmen are apparently all af flicted with the wanderlust, and free to follow their inclinations. This is by no means the first tour these adventurous ladies have undertaken together. A year ago they set off from New York, and, voj'aging through the Panama Canal, sailed olt to the Far East. China, Japan, the East Indies and the Mediterranean were visited in turn, but on again reaching the American continent they sighed for more worlds to conquer, and the islet-studded Pacific seemed to hold out the greatest allurement. Setting out on their second great ad venture, they descended upon the a! most perfect island of Tahiti. Their first observations of the Polynesian people made a groat impression upon them, and their determination was to see more of the enchanting isles of the Pacific. By the next south-going steamer they journeyed to and so on to Wellington. 1 A motor tour through the North Is I land took them to mapy important ' sights and -wonders, and from Auckland ! they sailed for Sydney, returning to this country by the Ulimaroa. Thev established their popularity among the passengers, bv whom they came to be known as “ the merry widows,” a term which greatly amused them. On Monday next these amazing globe-trotters will sail by the Tofua for Fiji, where thev hope to see some native celebrations
