TALES OF THE EMIGRANT SHIPS. The romances and some of the hardships of the early shipping days of New Zealand are recalled in the series of articles now being published in the “Star” relating to the early shipping days. Tho article printed to-day consists of extracts from the early files. ARRIVAL OF THE WESTLAND. (From the ‘‘ Lyttelton Times,” February 23, } 1880.) Arrived.—February, 21, Westland, ship. 1186 tons, Wojpd, from London, j ■via Plymouth, with immigrants. Ed-i ward Bennett and Co., agents. The Albion Shipping Company's 1 clipper ship Westland arrived on Sat-j urday. Tho ship was towed up from the Heads, and anchored off Ripa i Island Quarantine Station at 6 p.m. j The Health Officer, on seeing the medical report , ordered her into quar- i antine at once. From the report it ' appears that during the passage there were forty-seven cases of measles and twenty of scarlatina . there are now four cases of scarlatina, and five of measles under medical treatment. The .following is the report of the passage kindly furnished by Captain Wood : Left Plymouth on November 27, at r.oon, with fifty married couples, fiftvfve single men and seventy-one single women, ninety-six children, and nine infants; total 331 souls. Left with a north-east breeze and carried favourable- winds to the Canary Islands which were sighted on December 6. Thence to San Antonio, which was sighted on December 12. had light easterly and north-east- winds, and the same weather was carried to the Equator, which woe crossed on December 26 in 28 west,. The south-east trades were moderate and were carried to 22 south. Thence to 31 south had light north-east and easterlv winds and thence to 44 south light and variable winds. The westerlies vere light, and moderate ail through. The meridian of Greenwich was crossed on January 18, and that of the Cape on January 21. Marion Island was sighted on January 26. The Leeuwin was passed on February 8. and Tasmania, on February 14. The Snares were sighted at daybreak on February 13. and light easterly and north-east winds were experienced on the coast, to arrival on Saturday.
