MINISTERIAL. The Hon W. Nosworthy left Wellington for Oamani last night. The Hon D. Buddo. M.P.. left for Wellington last evening on business connected with his electorate. A motion of sympathy with the Hon G. W. Russell and fa rail v m their bereavement through the death of Mrs Russell recently, was passed by the Christchurch Parliamentary Association last night. Mr A. A. Chapman, chief clerk m the Union Steam Ship Company a office in Melbourne, has been appointed manager of the branch office which the company is opening in New York. He will be succeeded in Melbourne by Mr P. B. Cook, of the Vancouver office. At the request of a number of teach- * ers, Mr C. D. Hardie, B.A . late bead of West Christchurch District High .School, and for many years Inspector of Schools in Canterbury, has accepted nomination as a candidate for the vacancy on the Canterbury College Board of Governors. Mr T. Hughes, the retiring member is not seeking re-election. Mr -7. M‘Combs, M.P.. left last night for the Chatham Islands, which are in his constituency. Meetings hare been arranged to discuss with him the establishment of a county council on the islands, the erection of a cottage hospital. thd forming of roads and erection of bridges, the construction of a break-water, and the provision of a light to guide vessels. Mr P. H. Graham. F.R.1.8.A , architect, of Wellington, has returned from Australia, where he designed a lay-out for a garden suburb for a Melbourne company <reports the “Post”>. The scheme includes 400 residential sites, central shopping or busine'ss area, a nineteen-hole golf course, play areas for children, and other features. Mr R. A. Wilson, who has been promoted from the Invercargill office of the New Zealand Insurance Go.. Ltd.,, to the position of chief clerk in the company’s Christchurch office. was fa rewelled at the Club House, Otaiara, by the Invercargill Golf Club on Saturday. He was the recipient of a presentation. and the gathering unanimously expressed the desire that Mr Wilson should he elected a life member of the club. A Wellington message says that at a meeting of the executive of the National Dairy Association, Mr G. H. Backhouse was appointed secretary vice Mr T. C. Brash, who takes up duties as secretary of the Dairy Control Board on July 1. Mr Backhouse has been with the association for fourteen years, with the exception of four years when he was ar. the war. Mr T. Woodcock has been appointed assistant-secretary. A complimentary social was tendered, on Wednesday evening, by the members of St Peter's Presbyterian Church to Mr W. E. Bennett, who has lately relinquished the position of choir master and organist after over five and n half years’ service. The Rev W. Tanner, on behalf of the congregation. presented Mr Bennett with a suit case and set of pipes, a* some tangible token of the appreciation of the congregation of the very hard work put in by Mr Bennett during his term of office. The New Zealand contralto. Miss Mabelle Esquilant, who left the Dominion just a year ago to further her vocal studies in Europe, has had valuable experience. After hearing opera in London, she journeyed to Paris. Milan. Dresden and Berlin for the grand opera seasons. Miss Esquilant went on to Rome, and studied for six months under Signor Martino, a. master of the first rank in Italy, who was very enthusiastic over her voice. She was present at a great f perforamnee of “ Salome.” conducted V.v Strauss. Before leaving Borne. Miss Esquilant was granted an audience by His Holiness the Pope. By the last mail, news was received that Miss Esquilant was back in London, and was studying with Spencer Clay, who is greatly struck with her work and her fine voice. •
