BURGLARS ACTIVE.
THEFT OF £2OO IN HOKITIKA. (Special to the “ Star.”) HOKITIKA, January 12. A burglary took place in Hokitika during the early hours of this morning. A tobacco and jewellery store in Revell Street, owned by Mr R. Stephens, was broken into and over £2OO worth of cash and jewellery was taken. The double front door of the shop, fitted with a Yale lock, was forced open by wedging a sharp tool, probably a chisel or an axe, in tho jamb. Mr Stephens had placed in what he considered a secret place a cash box containing £62 11s in silver and notes. The. thief or thieves evidently knew the position of this, as it was taken. Over £2OO worth of expensive watches contained in a glass ease were also taken, the lock of jlie case being broken. Other missing articles are rings, tobacconist sundries, silk shirts and ties. Mr Stephens visited his shop at 12.30 a.m. and left everything as usual. The police have the matter in hand, and early developments are looked for. The office of YV. Jeffries and Co., auctioneers, was also broken into during the earlv hours of this morning, but only a box of cigars is missing. .
