Por the first time in American h:etory of a military officer has been given charge of the police force with absolute power to wipe out crime. General Smedley Butler gave the police fortv. eight hours to clean up the city an 1 padlock the saloon*, At the time he was exhorting a meet ing of police to action six bandits rob bed a Government liquor store two blocks away. This robberv wa ß one of thirty perpetrated in Philadelphia. Scenes in the city are rivalled in pub lie interest by reports from Florida, where officers raided a eo~called rob hers’ paradise in the Everglades, turning machine-guns on the miscreants. \ battle followed, which lasted all dav and resulted in the death of Sheriff Baker and two bandits.
