ASIATICS IN NATAL.
DISFRANCHISED FROM LOCAL POLLS. INTENSE FEEUNG MAY BE CREATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 11, 9.25 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, January 10. The Maritzburg Provincial Council passed an ordinance amending the Natal Township Act bv the total elimination of Asiatics from township franchise. The Asiatics in Natal do not possess the Parliamentary franchise, but were automatically enfranchised for local board elections by what is know as the Estcourt judgment of the Natal Supreme Court. The Administrator vainly urged the council to await the result of the appeal Which is now pending, as the new ordinance is practically identical with one previouslv passed by the council and vetoed by the Governor-General. He pointed out that the ordinance would create intense feeling in India and would embarrass the Union Government in its efforts to deal with the whole Asiatic question.
