The “Daily Mail” states that immense tidal waves which overstretched more than 650 miles, caused extensive damage on the Irish and French coasts. A wall of Atlantic waters crushed on to the small Brittany ports, sinking fishing vessels and flooding houses. It wrecked buildings on the Biarritz promenade and flooced a large tract of low-lying land near Bordeaux, interrupting railway traffic. The wave was accompanied by an earthquake. At La Rochelle, houses collapsed and the furniture was washed away. The wave lifted boats at Bayonne on to the quays. Six fishermen of La Vendee are missing and are believed to have been drowned. The yacht lolanthe,: at Kingstown, Dublin, was swept irom her moorings in the harbour and was smashed to pieces. Large motor boats were carried up among the houses. At Seaton, a Devonshire watering place, a boat rescued six naval officers from a submerged taxi-cab which suddenly became an island. Rain and snow caused considerable damage throughout France. Winter sports are in full swing throughout Britain, and Londoners are enjoying toboganmng and ski-ing on Hampstead Heath.
