SWIMMING.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Splendid swimming was witnessed at the Auckland Tepid Baths on Tuesday evening, when the Auckland provincial championships were decided, before a very large attendance of spectators. Two excellent performances during The evening were those of Misses Gwitha Shand and Pin Page. Competing in the ladies' championihp. of 100yds, Miss Shand covered the distance in 66 l-sseo. which time equals Miss Pauline BLoeft's New Zealand record. Misses Page. J. Bell and F. Stockley were the other competitors. From the start Mias Shand made the pace, closely attended by Miss Stookley. When 66 2-3rd yards had been covered, these two were together, with Misaes Page and Bell two yards behind. On the last lap Miss Shand. swimming with phenomenal dash, forged ahead to win by several yards from Miss Page, who was a foot in front of Miss Bell. Miss Stockley could not stand the fast net in the early part of the race, aud finished fourth. Misses Page and Bell also performed creditably in the intermediate girls' 300yds championship, the former’s effort being particularly good. Miss Pago won in 69 2-ssec. which is 1 3-ssec better than her own Dominion record. Miss Bell was close up second, and Mies N. Farquhar in third place. W. E. Smith created a surprise by defeating the Dominion sprint champion. J. F.nwright, in the 100yds championship, the time being 61aec. which was very good. E. V. Cunnold accounted for the 44Uyds championship in convincing manner. Enw right again being in second place. Traffic on the railways continues to be heavy, as large numbers of people are travelling. Arrivals from the north thi« morning by the ferry steamer were numerous. The south express contained thirteen passenger cars, all well tilled, in addition to three vans. The West. Coast train consisted of eight passenger cars and ttvo vans. Owing to the heavy volume of traffic the dispatch of trains this morning was delayed slightly. The station staff was somewhat hampered bv the large crowd of people that filled the station platform.
