CUP FOR SWIMMING.

INTERLUDE AT MEETING. At last night’s meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, at which Mr H. S. Williams presided, some heated discussion took place when the secretary reported that the ScottService Tailoring Company had offered a cup for competition at Canterbury championship meetings, tho cup to go to the competitor guining the most points in championship events. The chairman said that the Centro was very much indebted to the ScottServiee for offering such a valuable trophy for competition. Mr C. H. Rich moved that the cup should he accepted. Mr C. Atkinson said that tho pointa allocated in the conditions of the cup competition were not the same as those adopted by the centre for other competitions. The conditions also were unfair to the ladies, who had less events than the men. Mr Tiatchelor said that the cup should be accepted with the conditions laid down by the donor- It w'ould be an ungracious act to do otherwise. Mr C. Atkinson moved an amendment that the cup should be accepted with a proviso that the points awarded should be 5,3, and 1, instead of 3,2 and 1. . Mr H. S. Batchelor said that he would call on Mr Scott Ramsey, tho donor of the cup, and ask him to take the cup back, because lie thought it was a most ungracious thing. “ I waa the man who got the cup •” Mr Coulter: I hope Mr Batchelor will not do that. Mr Batchelor said he certainly would do it. Mr Coulter continued that he thought the cup should be accepted, and then tho matter of the conditions consid ered. Mr Atkinson said that the Centre had the conditions. The only conditions set down were those set down by Mr Batchelor, who was trying to force them on to the centre. The chairman said that the last remark made by Mr Atkinson was uncalled for. , , , Mr C. Kent: Mr Batchelor should withdraw his remark. Mr C. H. Rich’s motion that the cup should be accepted was carried, Mr Atkinson being the only delegate opposed to the motion. Mr Rich then moved that a sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs Williams, Batchelor and Atkinson should be set up to approach the donor of the cup with a view to the conditions being altered. Mr Batchelor: Don’t put me down. I tell vou candidly that I am going to ask Mr Scott-Ramsey to withdraw the cup. A voice: You can’t do it. Mr Batchelor said that he was going to do it. The person who hnd offered the cup had been insulted to his face. It was decided that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Coulter, Kent and Atkinson should interview the donor of the cup with a view to his altering the conditions so that the points of 5, 3 and 1 might be allotted, and also that points should be allotted the ladies on a pro rata basis. Mr Kent nsked if any individual member of the centre had a right to interview Mr Scott-Ramsey. The chairman: No. Mr Kent: Mr Batchelor cannot go, then ? The chairman: No. Mr Batchelor: I can go, and I am going! The chairman: You go against the wishes of the centre.

Mr Batchelor: I am going. lam not going to ask a person who has given a cup to be insulted to his face !
