HOLIDAY RACING. lh© period covered by the Christmas and New Year holidays is th© most popular in th© year with racing and trotting clubs. This is no matter for surprise. It is a time when the community is prepared td devote itself to pleasure, and clubs find it to their advantage, from the financial point of view, to cater libera’ly at this season for the section which takes its chief pleasure in sport. So far as Canterbury is concerned, there are no meetings for the gallopers. Consequently, patrons of that sport swell the crowds in other places. Riccarton bears the appearance every Christmas of a deserted village, the trainers, with their horses, being scatterea in all parts of the Dominion. Followers of trotting, however, are well catered for at home. On Boxing Day the Ashburton Trotting Club will hold its fixture, one of the most popular one day meetings of the season, and at New Year the Canterbury Park Trotting Club will hold two days’ racing at Addington. At both of these meetings most of the best horses in Canterbury will be found racing, and there should he some sport of the best kind. The strength of Canterbury trotting stables is demonstrated by the fact that, in spite of good fields at the two local fixtures, there are plenty of horses left to provide material assistance to the Auckland and West Coast meetings. The Canterbury contingent for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting is very ®^' ron £> and it looks as if a good share of the money will come this way. The team for the West Coast will be numerous, and will be made up largely by slow class performers and maidens. A few horses will go south for the Gore Irotting Club’s meeting on Wednesday, to he followed on Saturday by the Winton fixture, in add Irion to which there are races for trotters on the Wyndham and Southland galloping programmes. The big feature of the holidays will bo the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, which will occupy four days, and at which the best horses in the meeting will be competing, including the customary contingent from Canterbury. The Manawatu Racing Club’s fixture, extending over three days, also promises well. The Taranaki Jockey Club and the Waipukurau Jockey Club provide for more limited districts next month, and will be followed by Stratford, Marton, Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay Clubs at New' Year. The West Coast has a surfeit of holiday racing The Westland Racing Club and W'estporfc Trotting Club will start on Wednesday for two days each, and will he followed by the Grevmouth Jockey Club, Greymouth Trotting Club, Westland Trotting Club, Reefton Jockey Club and Inangahua Trotting Club. In the south the Dunedin Jockey Club will provide two days’ sport next week. Then the horses will bo divided, some going to W 7 aikonaiti on New Year’s Day, while others travel in the other direction, for the Wyndham meeting on January 1, followed by the Southland fixture on January 0 and 3. There are very few districts whose sporting enthusiasts cannot enjoy some racing during the next fortnight.

As usual, good arrangements have beeu made by the Railway Department for carrying the large crowd of Christchurch sportsmen likely to go to the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day. Special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.20 a.m. and 9.35 a.m., returning at 4.35 p.m. and 4.50 p.m. A horse train will leave Christchurch at 5.50 a.m., returning at 6 45 p.m. J. M’Gcrmbe will do the Manawatu meeting with Sunny Loch and Geranial. He will then return home, having cancelled the proposed trip to Marton, but it is probable that he will take his team north again next month to race at Trentham. Deucalion is to race at the Manawatu meeting next week, and he will also remain for the Marton meeting on January 1 and 2. Mr W. T. Hazlett will be absent from the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on January 2 and 3 for the first time since he has held the position of presklent. He intends being present at the Auckland meeting, where he will have Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light racing. Solferino’s stock have been racing very prominently this season, especially at South Island meetings. There have not been many big winners among them hut they have beeu in the money 89 times—37 firsts, 26 seconds and 26 thirds, for stakes totalling £B3OO. Limelight is his biggest winner with £1450, followed by Soliform £740, Roseday £705, Count Cavour £525 and Mantua £525. Riccarton trainers have beeu on the move in all directions lately, talcing teams to various parts of the Dominion to assist at holiday meetings. The first to leave home were those with horses racing at Auckland and they were followed by a smaller contingent for the Manawatu meeting. The exodus to the West Coast has also commenced, as well as to Dunedin. Others will leave on Monday, and during the next fortnight Riccarton will wear a deserted appearance, as there will remain only one or two trainers, with horses who are not wanted for racing till later in the season. Gloaming is gradually having his tasks on the Riccarton tracks increased in severity. After a few half-mile sprints, he was sent at a sound pace over five furlongs this week, and he pleased by the style in which he moved. From the nature of his work it looks as if R. J. Mason was getting him ready for an early race and it will be no surprise if ho is seen in action at Trentham next month, in the Waterloo Stakes, of six furlongs. As he has not won a race this season., he will have a big pull in weights over the best of his rivals, most of whom will by then have incurred the full penalty of 101 b. To concede 101 bto a brilliant galloper like Gloaming is a task that will not appeal to many owners as leaving them with much hope of success. Paphiam is not to do any racing during the holidays. He is at present having a spell, which may last a couple of mouths. Kz.ockl.vn met w ith a slight mishap a tow days ago. So far as this season has gone, 724 horses have won money in the Domin’ ion under the Rules of Racing. The progeny of 122 sires figure in the money-earning list. Kilbroney has had thirty-two representatives earning money for him this season. Between them they have won 23£ races, been second in 21 and third m 19. winning stakes to the value of £9489. Razzle Dazzle, for five wins and one fiecond, has won £2585. / our a,lf l one second, £IJGo. After this pair the biggest winners have been Dame Straitlace . Happy "\\ ari ior £7lO, I’Amour £530 and Roues £520. The progeny of Absurd have won this season £BIB2 in stakes, as a. result of 25 firsts, 15 seconds and 12 thirds, credited to twenty-seven horses. The list ■s headed by Loyal Irish, two wins, £1250 ; Motley, two wins and a second, £1250; Inferno, two wins, £945; Tamatete. two wins, £560. With less than five months of the season disposed of, the trotting sire Logan Pointer has put up a. fine record, thirty-four of his progeny having earned £9552. ns a result ‘of 27 firsts. 24 seconds and 14 thirds. His biggest winners are Logan Chief £1425, \cron £I3OO. Willie Logan £1286, Onyx (place money only) £IOSO, Promenade £025 and Vera Logan £437.

WAIRARAPA NOTES.

(Special to the “ Star.”) MASTERTON December 21. The Pahiatua Racing Club made a profit of £430 on th© recent two-day meeting, which is a better balancesheet than most country clubs in the Wellington province can show. The club will uow be able to carry on nicely next year and execute some small improvements at the course. At the Wairarapa Racing Club’s New Year meeting Ralston will race in the name of his breeder, Mr J. G. Duncan, a previous lease having been cancelled. Ralston is weighted at Bst in the Featherston Hack Welter, and he is already looked upon by many punters as something more than a good-chance outsider It may be stated that so far this season the Boniform gelding has done nothing to justify any confidence in him winning at Tauherenikau, as he ran unplaced at the Otaki meeting and at Trentham. It is freely reported that Peneus has been showing better form on the track recently, and if this is correct then Mr Vallance’s Boniform gelding, despite the fact Lhat he is top-weight (9st 91b) in the Warded Welter at Tauherenikau, will take a powerful lot of beating. Peneus is in much better condition thaji when he ran third in the Avon Welter Handicap and unplaced in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. Refrigeration is nicely placed with 7st 71b in the Wairarapa Jubilee Oup. Th© Martian filly is going along well in her work. Her owner is not yet decided whether to start her in the Flying, in which she has Bst lib, or in the Cup, hut probably a desire to land the jubilee trophy may weigh in the direction of sending her out in the big money. She has been successful in winning over a mile, so the extra distance in the Wairarapa Cup may not trouble her. Refrigeration has done fairly well this season over six furlongs, notching the Ruahino Handicap at Trentham and the Cressy Welter at Riccarton. There is a lot of talk locally concerning Vagabond as the “ correct pea” for the Wairarapa Jubilee Cup. Mr Kemball’s gelding is doing very satisfactory work on the track. Lately he has not had the best of the running in company, and his last effort or two has been no criterion as to form. Early in the season Vagabond won the Trial Hurdles at Riccarton and at the Masterton meeting won the Masterton Cup fairly easily. He did no good in/the New Zealand or the Canterbury Cup, while in the big money at Wood villa he did not get a clear % run as he might have With /st 121 bin the Wairarapa Cup he should not be far behind at the business end. Lady Fingers is striding along soundly in her work, and it is said that she has an eye on the Flying Handicap at Tauherenikau. She is galloping much more freelv than when she ran at .the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last month. This season IVIr Lnox s filly has won six-furlong races at the Masterton and Trentham meetings and has ,run twice unplaced. There is already a fair amount of money about for Bonetter for the Wairarapa Cup, and 9st 41b may not be a serious handicap to the Boniform mare. She is credited with doing some solid gallops on the track, and if she sees the post her stable connections will doubtless “go heavy.” If s h© can reproduce her Feudal ton Handicap form the rest of the field will be kept busy. Martian Miss is galloping exceptionally well in her training, and if her owner decides to let her have a flutter in the Flying Handicap at Tauherenikau she will carry a lot of money from this end of tho valley. The Martian mare won in better company at Riccarton than she will probably meet at Tauherenikau. Elcullus is turning out a hard horse to train, and m several of his morning gallops lately he has taken charge of his rider and caused a lot of trouble, wr? is ? ow sound, and n. Galbrtuth will have the geldinoracing again at New Year. For some time it looked as if the little fellow was m for a long spell, but care and patience brought him round Bitters has not bled lately in. his work, and there is every prospect of him facing the starter again shortly pie soil of Advance—Endeavour has built up in condition. Hytinus has recovered from the accident he met with at Feilding and W. Garrett has this useful gelding in nice trim for holiday racing. There is nothat Opaki looking better at present. Bonetter and Trespass are to represent the Kemball stables in the Manar watu Cup, and they are fancied by their respective trainers. Unfortunately. Bonetter was stopped in her pre paration through getting caught in a wire fence. Suggestion is now at Auckland, and V. E. Bid-will’s gelding will strip a very fit horse in tho Derby at New 5 ear. The Wairarapa owner will not be present to see his horse run, as he will be at the Jubilee meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club, of which body he is president. The Kemball team for the holiday racing is a strong one, and will consist of Bonetter, Trespass, Vagabond. Martian Miss, Bumptious, All Gold, Sollraid, Killorum, Sem.plice, Kilris, Foolish, Rose Martian and Boulita. After racing at Manawatu the teams will be divided, B. Burgess going to Marton and W. Hawthorne to Tauherenikau. Merry Day is now a regular worker on tho Opaki track, and appears to have recovered from her recent soreness. By the time the Wellington Cup comes round W. Garrett should have this mare at her best. Last year she was only beaten a head by Rapine. The veteran Opaki trainer R. Knox never had Sir Roseberrv better than he is just now, and if he remains sound he is sure to do well during the holidays. Lady Fingers, in the same stable, has also gone along nicely in her work lately, and since returning from the New Zealand Cup meeting has freshened up a lot. P. E. Hazleman arrived in Auckland during the week with Black Ronald, Zouave and Hallmark. The two are in forward condition, and should add further to their successes on the northern trip. Black Ronald had been showing signs of soreness before leaving Featherston, but his trainer does not attach much importance to it, and the Derby winner is expected t-o strip a better horse at Ellerslie than he was at Riccarton. Hallmark is a greatly improved gelding, and Zouave, though some of his performances this season, have been erratic, lias now settled down, and is doing, well. Taken together Mr Charles Elgar has a useful trio to represent him at Auckland. This district never had better prospects of pulling off some of the rich classic events at Ellerslie than at present. With Inferno and Killochra in the Foal Stakes the Wairarapa owners Messrs W. Hume and A. M’Dorald have a verv strong hand, and Black Ronald. Suggestion and Siliform ere a likely trio to put up a good fight in the Great Northern Derby on New Year’s Day. With the Auckland Plate. Royal Stakes and other rich stakes, it will indeed be surprising if a fair share of the stake money does not find its way into this district. There are also several Wairarapa horses, enccaged in. the handicap events*
