THE FIRST CHRISTMAS BOXES.

We all like Christmas boxes, even if we do not get many. In ancient days, equally as now, they were given and refused. The Church began the practice by placing a box at the church door for Christmas alms, which same were to be distributed among the poor. The Catholic 1 Apostolic, or Irvingite, Church perpetuates the custom to this day. It was the City of London which led the way 500 years ago against the begging of Christmas boxes. The Court of Aldermen declared that: “ It is ordered that no Sergeant of the City shall in future beg or require of any person of any rauk any money* on pain of losing his office.”
