IDEAS FOR EIDERDOWNS.

Many of the handsomest eiderdowns this season are covered with satin in large, bold floral designs, which are newer than the all-over chintz patterns. But there is also a great demand for individual covers to go with special rooms, and one firm who make a speciality of uncommon quilts havo many designed and carried out on their own premises, the most lovely ribbons being used in their construction. Tho main part of the cover is of black or coloured satin, and the ribbon, which is about 12in wide, is carried right around the middle panel in a band. In one of these quilts a brocaded ribbon with port of the pattern in velvet, was in a sort of feather design in which yellow, bln© and red merged into each other with a touch of gold tinsel on a black ground. TO HARMONISE WITH FURNITURE. It is quite important nowadays to havo the eiderdown to harmonise in sty’© with the period in which the r >r.m is furnished. Not only is this considered in the covering fabric, but tho quilting may be done in some characteristic form, as, for instance, an oval with lines of stitching radiating from the centre based on Adams decorations. But however elaborately tho centre may be quilted there are always one or two plain rolls surrounding it at the edge. The question of re-covering eiderdowns is an important one to the housewife. One woman always has hers done with shantung ; the charming soft tones of this material harmonise beautifully with modern cretonnes. Among others there is a Chinese blue that is lovely in a Chinese Chippendale room. This re-covering process may be made the opportunity to introduce a little hand embroidery, so that an old quilt is converted into an object, of beauty. A very good wearing quality taffetas is now used for quilt coverings and this in beige with an innor roll of satiu to match worked with Queen Anne sprays in dull reds or mixed colours placed at intervals would be delightful. Tho quilt should be edged with the antique narrow gold lace of tho period. SQUARES OF LACE. One woman lias her eiderdowns recovered with taffetas in beige, grey or some soft shade, with squares of filet lace or fine hand crochet dyed to match put on at intervals.
