CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

TETAIL shop assistants. A meeting of the Conciliation Council was presided over by tho Commissioner, Mr W. H. Hagger, to-day. the sitting being to endeavour to bring about a settlement in a dispute between the retail shop assistants and their employers. The employers’ representatives were Messrs B. L. Hammond (secretary of the Emplcvers’ Federtion), O. C. Cox and H. V. Free; and the shop assistants’ representatives were Messrs R. D. Martin and Sog3 Keller. „ _ .. A letter was rea-d from the City Council objecting to the Electricity Department being included in the award. Mr Hammond said there was no reason why the council should be exempt from the award. , __ Mr R. D. Martin: It was only recently that w© had to foroe the council to pay a girl in the sales department the award. Mr Hammond: Well as far as our side is concerned we are neutral. Mr Martin said that the application should be disputed and the application was withdrawn. , . . . Mr Hammond said that only the machinery clause could b© agreed to as a Dominion award would be framed m Wellington and other matters would be discussed decided to go through the machinery cluees and agree to as many ol thorn as possible.
