A VISITOR’S VIEWS.
MODERATES WILL LINK UP. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 10. Sir Edwin Cornwall, for many years chief Whip of the Liberal Party, who is visiting, New Zealand, believes that a coalition between the moderate Liberals and Conservatives will be the outcome of the British political situation. ‘‘ Mr Lloyd George should,” in my opinion, ‘‘ be Premier,” said Sir Edwin, ” for he is the live wire of British politics. However, lam quite sure from recent conversations I had with him coming from England to New York that he would be quite content to serve under Mr Asquith or any other Premier for the time, to enable the Europeau situation and the social aim economic problems at Home to be settled; but Mr Lloyd George would not rest content to be out of tbe Premiership indefinitely.” All three parties in the British Parliament wore divided into two sections or groups, continued Sir Edwin. The Conservatives had their die-hards and moderates, the Liberals had their moderates and advanced wing, and the Labourites had one section which, but for the advent of the Labour Party, would still be in the Liberal Party, and also its extreme Socialists. Therefore, in rpaking up the forces for the present Pai Lament it had to be considered that there was not sufficient differences between the moderate Conservatives and the moderate Liberals to make it impossible for them to work together. How those various elements would adjust themselves to the present, situation was a question of profound interest. There was no doubt that almost every concfyvahle attempt would be made to secure a sufficient number who would agree to work together and form a Coalition Government t-o deal with questions that were urgent, and for which there would be a common agreement amongst those forming tbe Coalition Government.
