WAIRARAPA NOTES.

(Special t-o the “Star.”) MASTERTON, December 6. Tho two-year-old Wee Marble, in W. Garrett’s stable, has come on a lot lately, and has been responsible for some pleasing work at Opaki- This gelding will race at the Wairarapa meeting at New Year. Suggestion is to carry Mr W. E. Bidwill’s colours in the Great Northern Derby, and he has improved since racing at Ellerslie in the spring. The best has not yet been seen of this th roe-yoar-old.

Twelve months ago the Kemball stable had eight two-year-olds in work, but at present only two (Solfraid and Killorum) aro working on the Masterton tracks. Trespass has disappointed his owner in his last few starts and considering the gelding has not- won a race for fifteen months he could reasonably be dropped a little in the handicaps./ Merry Day has not fully recovered from her accident in the early spring, though she is doing steady work at Opaki. This mare is looking in nice condition just- now. The win of Zouave on tho second day at. Feilding was overdue, and may be the forerunner of more successes during the holiday racing. P. Hazleman lias the gelding right now. W . Galbraith is still having some trouble with Bitters. Hie son of Advance—Endeavour has been showing symptoms of unsoundness, besides bleeding troubles. Insurrection having gone amiss, the Kemball stable will not be represented in the Auckland Cup, nor will the Masterton sportsman have anything else racing at Ellerslie. Peneus is improving with each gallop and should open his account for the season during the holiday racing. He registered a: fast six furlongs with Chimera recently. Prince Hal has recovered from the kick he received at Ashhurst, but is not being hurried in his work at Featherston. The little gelding will be seen out again at Christmas. Bonnie Heather has done very little work lately, and makes a decided noise

when galloping. Added to this, he has been troubled with his kidneys lately. The tracks at Masterton have never been as hard as during the past few weeks, and several horses Lave had to be eased up in consequence. Black Ronald, the New Zealand

Derby winner, is going along fiicely in his work at Tauherenikau, and is to go north and take his place in the Great Northern Derby field. For some weeks the black colt has been galloping the reverse way, and although he has had some difficulty in negotiating the sharp turns ou his home track, it is thought by his trainer that when he gets to Ellerslie he will have no bother on the wider track. As was the case at Riccarton, J. Olsen will ride Mr Elgar’s colt Mr A. 31’Donald is hopeful of Killochra reversing positions with Inferno in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and, judging by his track work at Woodville, it- is quite on the cards tha4j he will do so. It will be remembered that Killochra had done a good deal of travelling and racing before the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton. and he may have been a little overdone, while Inferno was practically a fresh horse However, this pair ot Wairarapa owned two-year-olds are at tho top of their class, and a good deal of local interest is being manifested in their next meetR. Knox gave Lady Fingers and Sir Roseberry a let-up on their return from the New Zealand Cup meeting, but they are now doing fast work at Opaki. along with their stable mate. Sir Moment. Lady Fingers was not herself at the Cup meeting, but she has freshened up a. lot, and is likely to regain her form at the holiday meetings. Sir Roseberry is not too sound, but it- is pleasing to note that he has not hied latelv in his work The two other members cf Knox’s team. Penury Rose and Sir Wai, will bs taken up again shortly in s view* of autumn racing.
