F. D. Jones will have a pair of useful three-year-olds to represent him at the Auckland meeting. Ballymena, a 3 a winner of the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby and Canterbury Cup. is exceptionally well handicapped in the Auckland Cup at 7st 61b. or 31b under weight-for-age, while Murihaupo reads well in the Railway Handicap with Sst 31b, for if he has not won a race this season he has several good place performances to his credit. This combination has been backed to win h big stake during the last few days, and it is now quoted at a very short price for the Auckland double. The scratching of Rapine for the Auckland Cup is a matter for regret, and it probably means that the Martian gelding is amiss. It cannot be because he was considered overweighted, as 9st was quite lenient treatment for a four-year-old whose form in Australia, earlier in the season, made him little short of top weight-for-age class in tho Commonwealth. It is to be hoped that there is nothing seriously wrong with Rapine, as horses of good class, especially among the older division. are all too scarce at present. Though Ballymena ranks as favourite for the Auckland Cup, there are indications that Te Kara and Muraahi are also fancied. Te Kjjra has raced very unluckily this season, but his form leaves him with a great chane He carried 7st 91b when ho ran second to Highland 9st 31b in the Mitchelson Cup, one milo and a half, last montn. Now he has Gst 121 b to Highland’s Dst.

After Murihaupo. who is a decided favourite. Razzle Dazzle and Pavo have most admirers at present for the Auckland Racing Club’s Railway Handicap. Reports from Wingatui state that Roseday ha, sresumed work aster a short spell. There seems a. doubt about him going north for the Auckland Cup. The trainers of the three leading two* year-olds Inferno, Killocra and Motley, were at Feilding, and all expressed themselves in terms of satisfaction as to the manner in which their charges were progressing in view of the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Mr G. MCurrie, who owns Motley, says that lie has looked upon Kpitaph as the speediest two-year-old sited by Absurd, but bo thinks that Motley will prove herself as good, if not superior. Wilderness, a half-brother to Civilform, show ed a lot of speed at Feilding. and he is spoken of as a very promising hark. A Melbourne- paper states that the Martian Bronze, colt Mars, who cost Mr Sol Green 2000 gs as a yearling., has been added to the list, and will be given a good spell. One of the features of this season’s racing so far lias been the success att< nding the few F.gypt’s progeny which are running. Cairo added another victory to the list when ho annexed the Kowhai Hack Handicap at Feilding.

It is reported from Taranaki that Reremoana, Dy Hallowmas—Bonny Portland, has gone amiss, which is hard luck for his connection, as he promised to be amongst the leading three-year-olds, up to a mile at least. Port Adelaide’s idea of photographing race finishes did not meet with the approval of the judge at Cheltenham (reports an Australian exchange). He intimated that he did not desire to refer to Ihetn to assist him in making decisions. It is unlikely that the idea will be persevered with.

Mr J. Higgins has been appointed chairman of the Australian Jockey Ciub’s stipendiary stewards, filling tho vacancy caused by the death of Mr Abel Hyde. Mr Higgins, who has held stipendiary positions in Australia, is at present in India, filling a similar office, and his return to Sydney will not be made till after the big meetings in Calcutta, which will be concluded some time next month. In the meantime, Mr C. W. L. Murchison will act as chairman of the Australian Jockey Club’s stipendiary stewards.

The death is‘announced from New South Wales of the imported stallion Buckwheat, by Martagon—Sesame, by St Simon—Maize, by Hampton—Palmflower. He had been ailing for a tew months, and his death did not occasion surprise. Buckwheat wai a good performer in England, and won £4OOO in stakes. At the end of his racing eareej| he was sold to Major Eustace Lode™ and Captain Greer for 7000 gs, and ; though only at the stud in England for a few seasons, he was a success, 6iring a number of good performers. In Australia he was not an outstanding success at the stud, despite the fact that he was mated with some fashionably bred matrons. He certainly sired a fewgood gallopers, including Vodka, All Wheat, Corncrake and Buckra; but when he arrived it w’as thought ha would quickly establish himself as one of the leadings sires, and buyers rushed the first draft of his progeny, six bringing IOOOgs or over, and his twenty-six youngsters averaged 693g5. Despite Buckwheat’s lack of success, his yearlings sold fairly well in succeeding years, and at lOoOgs he cost Dr Thompson, it is safe to say he was. a remark ably good investment. He might have had a much better record in Australia if liis stock had been handled differently. In England his stud successes came from horses who won over long journeys, after being given time to mature. Australian buyers, on the other hand, were in a hurry to get a return for their outlay, and rushed their Buckwheats into two-year-old races., The three-year-old filly Priscilla Dean is back again in her old qtiarters at A. G. Wilson’s stable and is being prepared for the Great Northern Trotting Derby, to be decided at Auckland at the end of this month. Wilson intends leaving shorlty for the north with his filly and Nelson M’Cormack, who has recently gone into his stable. XV. Warren is working a three-year-okl filly by Logan Pointer from Soda. She is not a big one, Amt is larger than her brilliant dam and is a good pacer. The sister to Nancy Stuart, in XV. Warren’s stable* is gradually getting into racing condition, but it may be some time before she is ready to race. She has plenty of speed. The pacer Trooper Dillon is standing up to his training quite satisfaetorily and this useful pacer should show his best form when next raced by G. F. Robinson. The trotter Peter Boaz, who has been gelded some time ago, is now in active work again and looks bright and well.

Gleaming is standing up to his training work in good style, despite the hard dry tracks, and is evdiently coming back to his best form. The pacer Irvar appears to be quite sound, and is doing all that is asked of him in training. This reliable honest pacer earns money when some of the more brilliant but erratic pacers fail. G. F. Robinson has just taken in hand a gelding by Kinetic, who looks a useful sort, lie already shows that he can pace accurately. 11. Frost’s gelding by Logan Pointer from Clarewood is doing well in his training and promises to develop into a useful pacer.

The Logan Pointer—-Country Belle gelding is doing a good deal of his work in saddle, and as he is a strong power ful pacer, he may race well in saddle events.

A two-year-old colt by Nelson Bingen from a Rothschild mare is one of the latest additions to A. G- Wilson’s stable. The youngster is well grown and shows a lot of quality.

The trotter Tiny Moon seems to be on the improve, and may yet repay G. F. Robinson for his careful work with this fast but somewhat unreliable trotter.

Barcelona looks particularly well, but the hard dry tracks are not to his liking, and after a recent work out he showed signs of lameness.

The Auckland owner-trainer, J. Williamson, made a very lucky investment when he secured the Absurd— Moira Machree horse, Loyal Irish, as a yearling for 200 guineas. He. also purchased Grotesque the same day for 400 guineas. A little later he put both colts under offer to Mr A. B. Williams, who chose Grotesque. As a two-year-old Loyal Irish dead-heated with Toa Xaua in the Auckland Welcome Stakes and was placed in three other races. At three years he made a trip to Australia, where he won the Maitland Cup, one mile and three furlongs, and on his return home his record was a win and two third*. Last season he was again a winner in Australia, while on his return lie won two good stakes in Auckland, besides being placed several times. Ho made another trip to Australia this season, and while in Sydney an offer was made for him- of £B3O and £250 out of the first win in a £SOO race. Mr Williamson, however, stood out for £I2OO, and he has good reason to congratulate himself on the offer being turned down, as since he came back to Auckland Loyal Irish has won the King Edward Handicap at Ellerslie and the St Andrew’s Handicap at Takapuna, the stakes from these two races totalling £125Cl Altogether Loyal Irish has earned over £4OOO in stakes, and he must rank as one of the rare performers by Absurd who can get a journey.
