Mr and Mrs L. Barnes left for Dunedin this morning. Mr Barnes is to sing the baritone solos in the “ Messiah ” in the southern city next week. A surprise party paid a visit to Mrs E. J. Hibberd, of Taylor Street, Ad. dington. A very enjoyable time was spent in dancing and music supplied bv Air J. Rugg and members of his orchestra. After partaking of a dainty supper the gathering cam© to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Among those present were:—Mesdames Heatley, Hussey, Hibberd (2), Woolley, Knight (2), Rowan, Byrne, Messrs Hatley, Hussey, Hibberd (2), Woolley, Anderson, Smith, Somerfield, Ayers. A concert organised by Air Kermode in aid of the Burwood Queen Carnival was held recently in the Shirley Methodist Sunday School before a large and appreciative audience. Those contributing items were:—Air and Airs Stuart, Madame Cara Holdgate, Miss Corner, Alessrs M’Phersort. Kermode, Skinner, Lcnmy and AJumford. An enjoyable time was spent by a large number of people at Mrs Southon’s residence in Bottle Lake Road, Burwood, on Friday afternoon, when a garden fete was held to raise funds for the local Queen in the school queen carnival competition. A lollie and soft drink stall was in charge of the Misses May, Southon and Ida Campbell; bran tub. Misses Dorothy Mortiboy and Stepping; and quoits were attended to by Mr Alortiboy, while sports events were carried out by Alessrs Mortiboy and Bradstock. Air Stevens in charge of joy rides. Afternoon tea was in the hands of Mrs Southon and several lady assistants. The proceeds will materially assist Aliss May Southon, and the school swimming bath fund will greatly benefit by Airs Southon’s enterprise. A jolly surprise party was taken to the residence of Mrs Dougall on Wednesday evening. Games and dancing ■were indulged in till a late hour. Mrs Orr’s and Mr Jackson’s orchestra supplied the music. The committee of the Sydenham Girls’ Club has organised a garden fete for this afternoon in the grounds of Mrs Robert Malcolm, River Road, Opawa. The Christmas tree and bran tub are in the hands of Airs Richard Anderson and Airs G. W. Munday, ■while Mrs W. H. Winsor and Airs F. Waters are in charge of the produce. Airs J. W. Mitchell and Airs T. C. Price are responsible for the sweets, and the afternoon tea is under the management of Mrs C. D. Gough and Airs C. J. Newell. Mrs Geo Bowron and MrSyRSpeight have charge of the cake stall. There will be tennis, and there are special arrangements for side shows and organised games for children in an adjoining paddock. The proceeds are in aid of the Sydenham Girls’ Club.

Mrs B. H. Gilmour, Lyttelton, president of the Lyttelton branch of the Plunket Society, was hostess at an enjoyable evening, the guest of honour being Airs Vere Livingstone. Members of the committee in making a presentation to Mrs Livingstone thanked her for the interest she had taken in the society in organising a concert for the Plunket Society Fund. Apologies for absence were received from Alesdames Preston, Waters, Porter. Nurse Boyd and Sister Gooding. Musical items were given by Mrs Gilmour, Mrs J. Stanley, Mrs G. Potts, Mrs N.
