Mrs F. Cargill. Christchurch, is spending a week at the H\dro Grand, Timaru. Aliss C. Duncan. Dunedin. left yesterday for Christchurch, after a short visit to Timaru. Mrs Dugakl M’Farlane, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs Wigley, Park Lane, Timaru. Mrs G. Pinckney and Mr Harold Pinckney, Glenaray, are expected in Timaru to-day, on a-visit to Mrs Hope, Tiimanako., Mr and Mrs Gladstone Robinson, Oukwood, and Mrs and Miss Giles, [ Otiritiri. who are in Christchurch, will | motor back to Timaru to-ciay. Miss Nancy Beadel and Messrs John Moor, Toby Gibson and Wyn Cowlishaw leave to-day for North Canterbury. where they will be the guests of Miss Agnes Turrell. Dr Rita Gillies, who for the past three years has occupied a position on the medical staff of the Southland Hospital, has tendered her resignation in order that she may take up private practice at Tnatapere towards the middle of next month. On Saturday last the St Luke's Fairy Scouts held a successful concert and fancy dress party. Many thanks are duo to Mrs John Deans, of Ric- • carton, for judging the dresses, also to several of Miss Lucy Cowan's pupils who contributed items. Mrs J. R. Brunt, lady president of the Linwood branch of the Britisft and Foreign Bible Society, has received from the Rev A. T. Thompson, New Zealand secretary of the society, a letter expressing his warmest thanks for the splendid help and co-operation of the members of the Linwood branch. Mr Thompson mentions that the Rev Dr Ritson is expected in New Zealand in April. On Thursday afternoon Mrs Horace Thompson gave a very enjoyable “at home” in honour of her cousin. Mr Sydney Thompson and Mrs Thompson, who have just returned from France after an absence of thirteen yearsAmong those present were: Mesdames T. Thompson. P. Thompson, Coop. Efford. Smith . and T. Fleming, Misses Thompson, V. Fleming ancj Irene Thompson, and 'Messrs W. Fleming, H. Thompson. Efford, P. Thompson, Coop | and T. Fleming. The final me«ting of the Plunkefc Ball Committee was held recently, and the joint tecretaries, Messrs T. W. Freeman and J. Moore, presented a balance-sheet showing the gratifying result of £lB7 profit. The committee realise that this splendid result was largely due to the generosity of several business houses in the city, and to the many friends of the society, who gave donations towards the supper. A general vote of thanks was passed to all who helped the committee to make the dance and cabaret so successful. A very enjoyable surprise party organised by Misses M. and V. Bailey’s friends visited Mr and Mrs J. Bailey's residence "Wantwood,” Templeton. The evening was spent in games, songs and music. Musical items were given by Miss V. Bailey and Mr J. Gofton (piano), and Miss M. Fahey (violin). Among those present were: Mr and Mrs J. Bailey, Misses VBailey, M. Bailey, A. Bigwood, N Chalmers, T. Somerville, L. Gordon, B. Hinton and M. Fahey, Messrs J. Gofton, T. Somerville, J. Stuart, G. Simpson, and A. Gordon. The enjoyable evening was brought to a close bv the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellovrs.” The annual sports held by the pupils of the School for the Deaf at Sumner were attended by a large number of friends of the children and teachers. A large number of events were gone j through, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. Afternoon tea and ' ices were served on the lawn. Each, child received a present, and in the evening, after high tea had been : served, the large, dining hall was ' cleared for dancing, which was con- ; tinned till midnight. The tables were beautifully dec-orated and called forth many expressions of appreciation, as did the gardens and well-kept grounds, which presented a very favourable appearance. despite the recent unfavourable weather conditions. An enjoyable dance waiThekl in the Pier Hall. New Brighton, in celebration of t\j£ coming of age of the youngest daughter, Mvrtle, of Mr and Mrs A. P. Hopkins, of " Kingston,’’ George Street, New ; Brighton. The hall had been decorated for the occasion, the colour scheme being in black, yellow and red. relieved with evergreens and toi toi and choice blooms interspersed with balloons. Miss E.
