SWIMMING.

MEETING OF CANTERBURY CENTRE. A meeting of delegates of the canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held at. the Tepid Baths last evening, Mr C. Atkinson occupying the chair. The Wharenui (Swimming Club wrote asking permission to hold a carnival on March 8. Permission was granted. A letter was road from the secretary of th© Hew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in reply to a letter from tho Canterbury Centre asking if a club could hold a gala with an event or events confined to members of another club or clubs without first obtaining the centre's permission, and also if a club could hold a gala, the events of which were solely confined to members of tho promoting club. In both cases the answer was in the affirmative. Tho letter also stated that the council wa» of the opinion that the centre’s rule could not, in the light of the practice of so many years, be held to apply to other than rccognisid intor-olub carnivals. The chairman said that it appeared that their rules were not specific enough to control tho position at _ present, and if it was desired to exercise control, the rules should be altered or new rules made. The list of certificates issued to schools for the year was read. It was stated tba r this 3 r ear’s figures showed a healthy advance on those for the previous year. Tho secretary of tho association wrote stating that a conference of centres wouli be held in Wanganui on January 29. and drawing the attention of til© centre to the rule reading, “ Centres havtag remits for diacussion shall forward then* to the council secretary at least twenty-one days before the date set down for the assembling of tho conference."

After considerable discussion it was decided that all polo matches held by the centre in tho tepid baths, should be started by 6 o'clock.

Tho Canterbury Olympic Committee wrote inviting representatives of the c«mtre to attend a meeting of the committee on December 12. The president, Mr Williams, and the secretary, were appointed delegates. The Corsair Bay Club askekd for permission to hold an intef-club competition in the Lyttelton Dock on Boxing Day. Permission was granted, a special provision being that the permission should be extended to allow tho club to hold the competition on New Year's Day should the dock be occupied on the former date. The programmes of the Bomerfleld, United, and East. Christchurch Clubs' carnivals and the lists of officials were passed Messrs C. Atkinson and Bell were appointed delegates to the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. The meeting was then adjourned to December 19 in order that remite for the conference of centres could be discussed by the various clubs. C HRISTCHURCH CLUB. Tho annual meeting of th© Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening, Mr B. O’Neill presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet (which showed a credit balance of £8) were adopted. The following officers were elected :—President, Mr W. E. D. Bishop; vice-presidents. Dr Chilton, Messrs F. F. Williams, C. -Lange, F. D. Waller. J. Francis, J. R. Buchanan, W. Allard. B. O’Neill. H. McD. Vincent and E. J. Howard, M.P.; honorary secretary. Mr N. L. Low; honorary assistant secretary. Mr F. J. Cook; honorary treasurer, Mr J- Unwin; club-cap-tain, Mr E. Gyde; deputy captain, Mr 11. Key; committee—Messrs H. Fountain, A. Wilson, Harker-Brown, E. Robson, A. F. Pearson, B. Lane and C. Saunders; honorary auditor, Mr F. F. Williams. The question of affiliating with the Canterbury Centre N.Z.A.S.A. was left to the committee with power to act.
