.Nominations lor the Ashburton Trottl.nS Club’s meeting will close at fire o clock this evening. Nominations for the Gore Trotting t - lnb s meeting: will close at fire o'clock to-morrow evening. In connection with the Methrer, Having Clubs meeting on Saturday a special train will leave Christchurch at -.40 a.m returning after the last race and reaching home at 9.6 p.in. Glentrmn has been restricted to easy, tasks during the last tew days. The imported mare is in good health, but she may ho allowed to forfeit her Auek land engagements. If ‘this programme is carried out. she will make her next appearance at the Wellington Racing Club s meeting in January. J. M Combe has nominated Sunnv Loch, Geranial and The Cheat for the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting. The scratching of Pilliewinkie for the Auckland Cup was due to R. XV. King being dissatisfied with his weight. The

XX inkie gelding, also Many Kittle and Deucalion, have been nominated for the Manawatu meeting, and a final decision as to their holiday programme wilt bo made when the handicaps tor the latter fixture appear. A trip to Auck land is still a possibility. Many Kittle still claims an engagement in the Auckland Cup. XYhipcord. who is to race over hurdles at Methveu on Saturday, has been nominated for the Manawatu meeting. The General Latour gelding. Te Kara, must rank among the unlucky horses of the present season. He has raced very* consistently at Auckland meetings. having finished four times in second place, without a win, and earnmg £950 in stakes. Scion showed improved form when he ran second in the Woodville Cup. Such a good stayer may have to be reckoned with in the Auckland Cup. in spite ol hie early failures this season. Gazeworthy" s win at Woodville yesterday was fully anticipated. She is liable to be re handicapped for the Railway Handicap at Auckland, but, us she has. only 7st 2ib, a few pounds extra, weight will not seriously inconvenience the Australian-bred mare. I The three-year-old filly Bourne Socks, Ibv Boniform from Puttee*, has been j shipped to Sydney. She is a. half-sister | to Killocra. and already she has shown 1 that she can go fast. I Hallmark, the winner ot the Maiden \ Plate at XVoodville. js a stable mate of the Derby winner. Black Ronald. Tie ! is an Australian-bred three year-old by Tressady. and is a very promising

The Lake County Jockey Club has übandoned its two days’ meeting for this season. The Dunedin District Committee is anxious that the permit should be retained m its own district and has recommended that it be given to the Riverton Racing Club, which already conducts two clays’ racing very successfully at Raster. The XVingatui trainer S. G. XVaro visited Riccarton this week, and returned home again yesterday with the Winkle—Carmania. three-year-old XVinkle, whom he will train for his new owner. Mr J. Black. Prompter, by Boniform—Leading Lady, went south on the same train, and will go into F. Shaw’s stable at XVingatui. to be trained for Mr H. Aker. Ben Spec, who has been spelling since the South Canterbury meeting, will be taken in hand again about the end of next week, it is probable he will well in his work, it is probable he will be raced on the flat at some of the holiday meetings 011 the West Coast.

The two-year-old filly Mai ha u, from Equitas (dam of Oratress and Murihaupo) has been in F. D. Jones’s stable at Riccarton since she was a yearling, but she is to he returned to her owner, Mr vS. J. Gibbons, when Jones goes north for the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting this month. The filly has an enlarged joint and it seems doubtful if she will stand the work necessary to get her ready for racing. Mr J. Griggs’s two-rear-okl Setting Sun. by Gay Lad —Snapshot, was gelded recently, and lie has now rejoined R. Alexander's team. He is a very big youngster and he is being given plenty of time to mature before he is set any serious tasks on the track. Helen Rufus is expected to pick up some money at the holiday meetings in the North Island. She is very useful over about a mile.

RICCARTON NOTES

Thursday. The light rain which set in last night did not last long enough to have any effect on the tracks, which were dry and hard this morning. After breakfast a. strong southerly wind sprang up. All the work was done 011 the plough, but though there ■were plenty of horses out, proceedings were not of much interest. As usual, the reverse workers had first use of the track. R. J. Mason had Parody, Gold Town and other members of liis team on the scene early, but their tasks were only of a useful character. Murihau|>o and Tmihanga went live furlongs in lrnin 4 l-ssec, both finishing well. Many Kittle did a round at threequarter pace, and Pilliewinkie was let off with a similar task, while Deucalion did half pace work. Winning Hit arfd Wild Hind were associated over six furlongs, which they ran in lmin 18sec without being ridden out. Palestrina and Wink both moved freely while covering six furlongs 111 lmin 17 2-osec. Ballymena did a round at half pace and a second circuit slightly faster. Barn Owl went twice round at half pace and Viewpoint followed with similar work. XVorking the ordinary way of the track. Glentruin was allowed to stride over fire furlongs at a sound pace, though not nearly at top. Limelight covered a mile in lmin -4* L-ssec, and was going on strongly at the end. Royal Star and Lucinettc were companions in a useful mile gallop, run in lmin 47 2-osec. Footfall and Star mist sprinted five furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec without beiug ridden out. Castellan did a working gallop over about a mile. Oarette covered a mile on the sand at a sound pace. Enare beat Maiauder over half a mile in 51 sec. Owl scorn be and Gamebag were given three-quarter pace work over about six furlongs. Cumbrao and Rhondda sprinted half

a mile nicely in 50 2-osec. Giantkiller and Lord Nagar occupied 53 2-osec ove.r half a mile. Thomdale sprinted half a mile up the back in 37 2-osec. Princo Ferouz, Dame Straitlace. Some Kid, Sprinkler and other members of T. H. Gillen's team get through useful tasks. Kukumo and Heraldry ran fire furlongs together, the last half mile in 52sec. while Warhuc did a. circuit at half pace. Red Kriss and a. mate occupied Imm 18 2-ssec over six furlongs. Likelihood finished well after covering six furlongs in lmin ISsec. Solferiti and The Reaver ran five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec, Solferiti having a blight advantage at the finish. Finora sprinted halt a mile nicely in

WANGANUI NOTES. (Special to “ Star.") \\ ANG ANTI, December <5. P. Huzelinau intends taking Black ■Ronald. Zouave and Hall Mark to Auckland. Other members of his string will do the Wairarapa meeting. Amber Tips is to be Spelled until

autumn. The tracks arc* too hard for him .just now. Homage, the Absurd-Eulogy filly who was turned out last autumn owing to her knees giving trouble, is said to be all right again, and her trainer intends to put her in work again shortly. The programme for the XYanganui Jockey \C!ub's Cup meeting has been drawn up. The stake money is the same as last season. A maiden race, of five furlongs, weights Bst, will take the place of the XViritoa Hack Handicap. Alaric looks none the worse for his racing at Feilding, though he appeared to be a bit sore after working on the plough yesterday. The retirement of Thespian means that XX'. Rayner will have only Motley to take to Auckland. Veil was encored for sprint events, but'she is to be kept for Marton. Motley is going along well and look in great heart. The tracks are very hard and trainers are having an anxious time of it. It has been the driest season for sixty M.Gardner is giving his team plenty of hill work in preference to using the tracks. He has Gaillard. Pirouette and Ora's Delight engaged at Manawatu. Siaosi. the two-year-old brother to Civility has recovered from his recent cold and will be got ready lor a race at Marton. HAWKE’S BAY NOTES. (Special to the “ Star."’} NAPIER, December 5. T. F- Quinlivan’s horses were in good

form at Woodville, Gaze worthy winning, while Royal Divorce and Scion each ran recond and Quest third. Scion looks as tnough he may be hard to beat in the Auckland Cup. Gazeworthy, too. may travel well in. the Railway Handicap, provided Quinlivan can keep her from going sore. With the cracks out of the way, Tanadees scored a win in the two-year-old race at XVoodville. He is likely, however, to l>e seen to greater advantage as a three-year-old than a two-year-old, and it is quite on the cards that he will develop into a Derby colt

at three years. One or the finest looking two-vear-olds seen in Hawke’s Bay this season is Royal Diadem, by Polydamon—Royal Mary. He is a commanding chestnut, standing about sixteen hands, with plenty of quality as well as power and substance. He ran at XVoodville but he is not ready, and he may not he seen at liis best until be has had a race or two. He may always be more at home over a short course than a long one. bather’s X oice, the two-year-old Absurd—Shrill colt, who went amiss some time ago. is on the improve., though his facial appearance is still nor. quite normal. Tire trouble seems to have been what in humans would be called a severe attack of neuritis, but whatever the trouble was. l*e seems to have almost, completely thrown oft" the effects. As far as galloping is concerned, it is to be hoped such a line looking colt will not suffer any permanent ill effects.
